How College Football and NFL TV Schedules get made with Michael Mulvihill

Published 2024-05-20
Fox Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt sits down with Fox President of Insight and Analytics, Michael Mulvihill to discuss how College Football and NFL games are scheduled between the different TV networks. Michael explains how the game selection process between TV networks works and why it’s closer to a fantasy football draft than people may realize. The two also discuss the decision making when choosing the Big Noon Saturday Games that were announced last week: Michigan-Ohio State, Texas-Michigan and Alabama-Wisconsin. Mulvihill also details the origins of the concept of Big Noon Saturday and why FOX is adding big-time games on the Friday night schedule this Fall.

This was an incredible interview! Standing ovation to Klatt, I didn’t know I’d be so intrigued by learning about the TV coverage of CFB! *mind-blown
  • @markkoep8031
Klatt nailed it with that last comment on the noon start. Highlights are on all day and night saturday. The night games highlights are done immediately because subday morning it all shifts to nfl.
  • As a former Wolverine living abroad, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate big noon kickoff because I get to see our biggest matches at a reasonable time of day

This was fascinating and insightful. May I add that as recent as mid 2000s, the Big Ten was almost exclusively an afternoon league for the entire season. So Big Noon speaks to this long tradition. Now with the four west coast schools joining, they can and have to spread out their games into every Sat time slot, along with Fri night.

I love this behind the scenes episode! Y’all should broadcast the draft.
  • This was awesome! Best episode by far. I think stuff like this for die hard CFB fans is fantastic l!!!
  • @andybenis
It's too bad Mike couldn't look more relaxed on set. 😂 Dude left the show directly to his boat to go sailing. Great stuff. Thank you both.
  • @kylemalachowski

  • @demonof9
I wiah the Ohio St. vs Michigan game would be under the lights. Love Gus, Joel and Jenny.
  • As a west coast viewer and Michigan alum, Big Noon is awesome! I roll out of bed, grab coffee and we have a great game to watch right away! Can still do other things in the afternoon with family. Thank you for all you do!
  • @wardski123
Incredible insight. Had no idea. Great job, Joel!

I love Fox having so many OSU games. There is no doubt that Fox… specifically Joel and Gus are the best analysts in the business. They are professional in every aspect of the term. The BIG is blessed to have such great unbiased coverage. Last year they covered TTUN a lot and rightfully so. Having said that, they cover the games with great respect for all fan bases.

Joel and team, you did even better than answer my mailbag question; you did a whole podcast on it. Great work!
  • @taurusb1911
I'm SEC for life but I like Big 10 additions. Was so tired of seeing Michigan vs OSU and sometimes seeing Penn St were the only good games.
  • @jerodjones1771
