He died whilst thinking what he was going to eat for dinner tonight, that's the worst way to go.

The reason tarkin did not leave was that If the death star exploded while he evacuated he will be left responsible for its destruction and punished by Darth sidius, When we see him thinking he's thinking that if this works I'm safe if this doesn't well at least I die with pride.

I remember seeing this in theaters, the crowd went nuts!

Fridge brillance (from TV Tropes): Tarkin refusing to escape with his personal shuttle becomes a lot less arrogant and a lot more logical once you think about the possible results of the battle. If he stays and the Death Star succeeds, he will have earned credit for destroying the Rebel stronghold and once again proven the Emperor's trust in him. If he flees and the Death Star succeeds, he will appear cowardly and lose the favor of the Emperor and the respect of the other commanders. If he flees and the Death Star is destroyed, he will again appear cowardly, but this time also responsible for losing the Death Star, something the Emperor would not take lightly. Finally, if he stays and the Death Star is destroyed, he will not only escape a gruesome punishment by the Emperor, but also save face by having stayed on his post, earning a place in the Empire's possible history book. The only true option at any time for him was to stay.

Tarkin was smart to die aboard the Death Star. It was quick and painless... unlike how death by Sidious would have been.

I imagine when Tarkin met Krennic in the afterlife, Krennic would say, "How does it feel, Governor Tarkin?"

Let's all appreciate that many of us are here after finding new ways to hate Tarkin in the Clone Wars/Bad Batch.

Tarkin says “I think you overestimate their chances” but if you look at his grimace right after he says it 0:12, I’d say Tarkin is estimating their chances pretty damn accurately himself

Grand moff tarkin never gives up

Even before imminent destruction, Tarkin has such a calm demeanor.

Who hasn't been in this kind of scenario at least once? Eventually you do learn to accept that the dice are being rolled, and you just hope they'll give you favourable numbers. Tarkin remains calm because there is nothing else you can really feel in that moment.
