Trace the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire which, under the leadership of Genghis Khan, became the largest contiguous land empire in history.

--

It was the largest contiguous land empire in history— stretching from Korea to Ukraine, and from Siberia to southern China. And was forged on the open plains. In the 12th century, the East Asian steppe was home to scattered groups of nomads who, by 1206, would be united under the innovative leadership of a man named Temujin. Anne F. Broadbridge details the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire.

  • I think Temujins most genius move was creating a rudimentary welfare state for soldiers who fell in combats families. If you fell in battle you knew your family would be taken care of. That was revolutionary for the time and place.

  • Kudos to the awesome feat of summarizing the major milestones in under 5 minutes! For people interested in knowing more, an amazing book is "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World" by Jack Weatherford.
  • « They allowed religions to flourish just so long as they prayed for them » is such an underatted detail to their administration of foreign countries and it’s so beautiful
