Richard Dawkins: Why are there still Chimpanzees? - Nebraska Vignettes #2

Published 2009-07-14
Richard Dawkins clears up the misunderstanding of Evolution that is all too common: If we descended from Chimpanzees, then why are there still Chimpanzees? Dawkins explains that we DID NOT descend from Chimpanzees—we both share a common ancestor.

During Richard Dawkins' 2009 American tour, we visited Judy Diamond's "Explore Evolution" exhibit at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln. This exhibit has now been replicated in six museums around the country. While visiting we filmed a collection of short unrehearsed and unscripted videos—just inspired by the "Explore Evolution" exhibit.

Poor Richard. Every time he does one of these I bet he thinks: This will do it, I'll explain it calmly, slowly, and at the most basic level so even a Bible thumper could understand. Two seconds after seeing it, they shout "show me the intermediates!" or or "thermodynamics!" - or Pol Pot, or 4 billion people can't be wrong, or where are your morals from. But thank Sagan he is still fighting the ignorance!

  • I just found it out, I think the reason people are religious is because they watch this and say Fuck it, this is too confusing, Ill just be religious.

Thank You Professor Dawkins for thoughtfully and calmly explaining that, in a way that is absolutely NOT condescending. You did a great job.

I knew that we were closely related to chimpanzees before I even heard of evolution. As a child I noticed how similar they are to us. They have five fingers, body parts are similar, face looks similar.

Explaining the Theory of Evolution to a doxastically closed theist is like trying to explain algebra to a coffee cup .

Dawkins is a genius! He sparked my interest in deep learning about evolution, and it is an amazing and beautiful thing!

as a german i think its quite confusing how people can not get this. I feel like we are catapulted back in Darwins time when people thought hed say that humans and chimps are like child and parents... i mean we have lots of religious people in germany as well but not even jehovas witnesses deny evolution here, they are just saying that god helped it along and sparked life
