When we tried to fuse FE and SMT, there was a fusion accident and this popped out instead.

When the Switch port was announced, they advertized it as Atlus X FE instead of the original SMT x FE. SMT really became an afterthought in its own crossover.

Something I really liked about this game that I wish would at least seep over to Persona is that the Mirages are actual sentient entities capable of talking with their Masters, even outside of the Dark Hour I mean Midnight Channel I mean Metaverse I mean Bizarro World.
  • Fun fact: This game exists because Pokemon Conquest (another banger) was already in development, so instead of FE x Pokemon they chose SMT instead.

I actually like TMS, weird as it is. The feel of the game isn't half bad, with some intertext of SMT and FE thrown in here & there. It's got great songs, nice combat and excellent self-aware humour. "Just because you got rejected from a job, that doesn't mean you got to destroy the whole world" is peak comedy

I think the most interesting thing about TMS, well besides the fact a post apocalypse caused the inhabitants of Arcanea to turn into emotion/soul-eating demons, was the fact it happens after the bad ending of Mystery of the Emblem.

Wish Tokyo mirage sessions would get a discount. I'm not paying full price for it.

this is like the mario and sonic crossover where they went to the olympics
  • I remember liking Tokyo Mirage Sessions from the little I played of it, but the more I reflect on this game, the more I tilt my head on what it was trying to do. My only guess to why the finished project came out like it did was either Company not feeling synergy with the other, so this was a compromise, but like… why idols??

Tokyo Mirage Session fucking slaps, not even joking.

A few things with this game. All Switch versions are censored, including the Japanese one, the only one not censored is the Japanese WiiU version (which led to the WiiU version TMS getting a huge spike in sale in the JP eShop when discovered, which was kinda funny). A feature added in the Switch version was the ability to get through battles faster, in the WiiU version, you HAD to watch all of the animations play out ever single time (making nearly every attack take over a minute if you're playing the game effectively). You actually don't have to defeat Yashiro when fighting Excellus (didn't even know you could do that, since Yashiro full healed himself and the boss the one time I attacked it; didn't even figure out what to do with the last part of the fight and just threw Empty Wave at him, use Magic Mirrors (which you can buy for somewhat cheap), and just have the boss defeat itself).

I think the original was a case of "wrong place, wrong time". Wrong time because nowadays hololive has given a more appealing idea of idol culture to the masses and several of their talents openly admit to being fans of the series. Also because it came out as we were focused on the Fates cast. Wrong place because Fire Emblem isn't exactly known for musicals (even less so in the west that didn't get the JP commercials) as opposed to something more niche like the Marl Kingdom series.

I remember being REALLY excited about this game back when it came out on Wii U! It’s not my favorite game in the world, wouldn’t say it’s a great game either, but looking back, this was actually my first introduction to SMT to an extent, and I look back rather fondly on this game for it! I do wish there was a bit more variety in the character selection though, the FE Warriors games had the same issue.
  • We were robbed. We could’ve had Ashera, Goddess of Order, fist fighting Lucifer! And instead we got the ‘Idolosphere’

For what it was worth, its a solid experience and perhaps more like a decent introduction to the combat style of SMT. I actually enjoyed the themes of the Japanese entertainment industy and how it really causes people to lose their sense of humanity, all due to chasing fame and fortune. I judge it on its own merit and i feel like its a solid merged entry. I think when the crossover project came together, it was very hard for them to come to a concept without drastically losing one or the other. In one concept, Madeus was supposed to have absorbed the Knowledge of a god, and slowly merged Tokyo with Archanea, essentially bringing The Hero and Aleph into this newly merged world. At least that was rhe rumor before it turned out it was hard to execute.

These long form videos are great. Hope you keep making more of them.
  • I actually like the game. The story isn't spectacular, but if you take it as it is the gameplay is really fun and addictive. And the side stories are really fun! It is fun to note that the game takes place after one of FEs bad endings. I've put over a hundred hours into the switch version just cause I wanted to try and figure out the longest session possible.
