One of the most common misconceptions about YouTube creators is how long it takes to "make it". Yes, there are those "unicorns" who seem to be overnight successes, but the reality for most people is that growing your account and getting subscribers is a process. If you want to go full-time on YouTube, you have to be prepared to put in a lot of work. But how much, exactly? In this video, Sean Cannell and I discuss how long you can expect to be creating content before you become successful. Sean even breaks it down into how many hours it took him to grow on YouTube, to give you a benchmark for what you can expect.

Thanks for having me back on Video Creators Tim. Grateful for you. Your long term grit and consistency on YouTube is inspiring. 👊🏼⚡️💯
  • Rome wasn’t built in a day. Just enjoy the YouTube journey and don’t worry about numbers

For about a year I was doing YouTube casually just a video a week, sometimes. Over the past couple months I started doing 2 videos a week without fail and many days I’m up filming in the morning before my regular job, I come home late and I’m up all night editing getting like 3 hours of sleep. Since I started putting in so much work my channel has started growing and I got 2 collab coming up with 2 youtubers who have over 20,000 subs which for me is epic compared to my almost 2000. The hard work really pays and even though it is so hard it feels totally worth it from these little milestones I’ve been hitting. ☺️
  • I have started a channel about life from 60 - 100. I’m 60, so I reckon I have 40 years to get to grips with this. Yay! No pressure.

"I traded in my 9 to 5, for a 5 to 9" SO true. As a full time YouTuber, there's rarely any "off" hours :)
  • @TheGoldProject
I totally agree with the information in this video. I call YouTube my, "side hustle," because I have a full-time teaching job. But, I spend double the amount of time on my channel learning the ins and outs of the YouTube business. It takes so much more than making an awesome video. I absolutely love it. You have to love it in order to put the work in. Definitely not a unicorn. LOL!!!

This was actually really encouraging!! I was feeling discouraged with my channel's results and I love the mindset shift of being in a "practice season". Thanks for sharing your stories about how long it took you guys to go full time and all of the work that went into your channel. It keeps me encouraged to keep moving forward + learning.

My YouTube channel just got verified (✔️) last night! Thanks for all the tips guys!

The editing takes hours to days which takes out the joy from doing what you love
  • @SixBlindKids
I appreciate you guys keeping it real and pragmatic. Perspective is important. Looking forward to checking out Sean’s book!

"The best things in life are on the other side of hard work", I definitely agree. I just started trying to take my channel seriously and be consistent, and it's totally more work than I imagined. However, I'm ready to put in the work because I'm passionate about it and find it genuinely fun! Excited to see where my channel goes from here.
  • @MartaKeller
I LOVE the authenticity of this video! I'm so tried of hearing about the unicorns that mislead everyone. You're both examples of what is takes to make YouTube happen - CONSISTENT WORK - and it's so refreshing to hear. THANK YOU for keeping it real real!
  • @HumansOfVR
The main reason people should hustle with youtube is because you freaking love doing it :)

Hi Tim, Thank you SO much for sharing this wonderful interview with Sean. Everything you both said is SO true. I am a new small channel and I knew it would be a lot of work and that is why I waited to do this until now - when I knew I would have more time. My family is grown now and my husband is retired so are schedule is a lot more flexible. This can be a lot of fun but I would say that it is important for us to remember to do this because we enjoy it and want to share our knowledge with others to help them. AND...focus on improving our own videos rather than trying to compare yourselves to others. (And, as someone who is now in her 60s, I will share that learning to improve ourselves - in general - and not compare ourselves to others is a wonderful life lesson!!) And Tim, I like what you shared that you tell your children. As parents...That is what we always said too!! It’s one of the best things that young people can learn. Thank you for all you do!! God bless, Mary 😀😀😀
  • This video is really encouraging...Cried a lot last night for not getting new subscribers. I am 515 subscribers old today....And so ready for the upcoming hustles. Hope I made the right choice since I got nobody to advise on this topic.
  • I needed this video since 6 months. Thank you Tim and thank you Sean. You are really changing our lives for the better with your work.
  • @HengHuiMei
YouTube is my passion project! I've just started my channel a month or so back but have learnt so much on this platform! Thanks for the great advice!
  • @LyubavaTravels
I am still new to YouTube, but I already totally understand what are you talking about. And now I really admire all of the youtubers who work so hard. It's not seen from outside at all
