The optional assignment by Dr. Anne D'Aquino asked for scientific analysis and critical thinking to understand “the impacts of genocide on human biology.” As CBS 2's Sabrina Franza reports, the university took issue with that choice of words.

That sounds so ridiculous. Can’t believe she lost her job for giving a real-world case study for students to critically evaluate.

You can’t say you’re an institute of higher education and stand for “academic freedom” and then immediately terminate a professor for introducing politics into a public health class. The two subject matters are intrinsically linked

She was fired for telling the truth. That’s not a good look for DePaul.

Imagine a public health professor being fired for asking students to think critically about the effects of apartheid on public health.

You will end up being on the right of history.
  • Norman Finkelstein world leading expert on Gaza was denied tenure at DePaul.
  • DePaul does what they all think and feel. Pretend it’s not happening, and it will go away.

Anne, as a DePaul student pursuing a Master's of Science in biology, I am so proud of you. I am Jewish and you have made me think about the amount of times something like this must have happened during the Holocaust when my family members were being murdered in Auschwitz. I imagine there were many brave professors in the 1940's who were reprimanded, suspended, and fired for rightly speaking on the horrors happening in another part of the world. I imagine that those who fired them were tortured by that reality up until their deaths. I am ashamed of my department, and I will never be deterred from encouraging my students to integrate their experiences and current issues into their biology, and vice versa. Biology and health sciences are fields that teach us to heal the world. We cannot heal the world unless we acknowledge the hurt being actively done. DePaul students stand by you, and we will continue to fight for you!

If a professor gave this assignment as mandatory, then downgraded papers which took issue with the terminology and the basic premise of the assignment while addressing, in general, the impact of war on a densely populated area (which in the present case could also include Israel proper), THAT would be a reason not to renew her contract. But this?? Seriously??

I am sorry she got fired. She should not offer the assignment for her class. I hope they re-hire her or she gets hired as a teacher at another school.

The reason “they” don’t want this type of coursework in higher education is because it will serve as further future evidence against their actions. It’s a very credible source.

Does 'genocide' mean give leaflets, aid, corridors & field hospitals to your enemy where the only thing you steal from them is birth control aid because the population of Gaza DID increase between 2023Oct07 & 2024Jun14 ?
