In my experience, engines programmed to 'play badly' don't play like human amateurs at all. Instead they make a few super-accurate engine moves, then randomly hang a piece.

Plot twist: The Bethbots aren't trying to beat Levy at chess by playing good moves. They're just trying to get him to have a heart attack from raging too much at their bad opening moves and irrational trash talk, so that they win by default.
