  • Linoone in gen 7 mostly popped off because it got Stomping Tantrum i.e. finally a move to click against steel types (which it lacked since gen 4 when HP ground became special) Troat chop 80 BP as upgrade over Shadow Claw's 70 and Gluttony pinch berries, meaning activating Belly Drum only cost its item slot and no health, certainly helped

bidoof on its way to potentially sweep an entire team thanks to having a bad day (apparently being moody is capable of killing the meta):

"but diggersby tho" being a banned phrase on Showdown will never not send me
  • I just want to point out, that beavers in real life have higher attack than Bibrael for sure, one bite of them can break your bones lol.
  • @FatherOfGray
I've always preferred the term "Early Game Regional Mammals" or just "Regional Mammals" myself since they're actually not all rodents but they are all mammals at least.

CHOICE BAND ADAPTABILITY GUMSHOOS IS AN UNSUNG HERO IN RANBATS….
  • Watchhog is probably the saddest pokemon ever tbh •sorta ugly but not ugly enough to be memorable or funny •HM slave in a game without HMs •Outclassed by a Pokemon of the same type you get basically at the same time •Pretty much doesn't appear at all in any other game other than it's original one •Brutally outclassed in every way by everything •One of the few pokemon to not be in any switch game ever (for now but I'm not sure why they'd include it in legends ZaZa)

i saw someone on twitter refer to this group of pokemon as “regional critters” and i’ve been calling it that ever since
  • A lot of them also punch above their weight in singleplayer. Obviously they fall off, but like Bidoof is actually a pretty great pickup in a nuzlocke or difficulty hack because it evolves at lvl 15 and learns Headbutt by lvl 18, and 85 base attack behind a 70-power STAB move is actually pretty hardcore for a pokemon that comes online before the second gym
  • I probably could've talked about Obstagoon but decided to save it for something else where it'd fit in better

Funny thing about Raticate in RBY is that it's unironically pretty ok competitively, despite being designed to be bad. It's a top tier NU threat and revenge killer, with niches in UU and OU solely due to one move, that being Super Fang. It's nothing too flashy, especially outside of NU, but the fact that people even acknowledge the rodent outside of NU, of which itself is a decent placement for something like Raticate is pretty fun to think about
  • Greedant is actually pretty good in random battles, it has enough bulk to survive multiple hits due to cheek pouch and can’t go ignored due to swords dance
  • I can explain linoone in gen 7 uu, linoone in ultra sun and moon got espeed for the first time naturally via an egg move. It made people more likely to try it out and when paired with a pinch berry and it's new move stomping tantrum it became a strong pokemon as it could get the boost heal back to full then nuke
  • @Iris_Descent
raticate is funny because it can unironically cook in singleplayer, especially in gen 1, whenever i play RBY's singleplayer for fun it tends to be on my team for a long time

Finally people recognize how fucking vast furret's moves are. I legit ran it in doubles before dlc arrived Stab belly drum is crazy tho
  • bibarel is a fantastic mon solely due to its hm capabilities. you'd struggle a lot to beat platinum if this chad of a mon didn't handle all the non surf and waterfall hms for you while your other 5 mons could use whatever they want.
  • @frankwest5388
in a casual playthrough the rodents have a very important niche, which has lead to them being the tradition that they are. Which is that they are the first mons that get good moves, usually getting at least some normal move at or often above base 70bspm at a time when their stats dont drop off, likely are even good, and most monst have less offensive power and moves that top off at 60 bsp
  • Furret is a gen 2 normal type which means it gets an insane movepool for no fucking reason which is why its always on my gen 2 playthrough teams
  • @Lily_beez
Furret's movepool is actually insane bro can use flamethrower, ice beam, thunderbolt, knock off, play rough, elemental punches and tidy up!!! If furret had a usable attack, speed and ability they'd probably be a lower tier menace 💀
  • @SSNNPBCC
The fact Furret was OU on release into scarlet & violet was hilarious
