Grossglockner High Alpine Road Vintage Race Car Hill Climb inc 6 liter V16 Auto Union Bergrennwagen

Published 2024-06-11
The Grossglockner Grand Prix is a great assortment of cars rarely seen anywhere and to see them race up the highest mountain in Austria on a snow flanked, steep winding road is something else.

Seeing these machines fighting gravity against the high-alpine backdrop makes circuit racing seem so tame by comparison.

There was even a supercharged 6.0-liter V16-powered Auto Union Type-C Bergrennwagen (hill racer) on the course (No 83).

In 1938, it clocked the fastest time up the mountain pass.

Other classic marques included Bugatti, MG, Porsche, Lagonda, Marmon, Veritas, Borgward, Alvis, Bentley, Wolseley and others

Rob and Krys Henshaw, an Australian couple, created Aussie European Tour, a Youtube Video channel and website (www.aussieeuropeantour.com) to record the various tours and holidays they have enjoyed over the years.

As well as documenting the travels for their own benefit they hope they can pass some tips and advice to other travellers.

Some of the videos may include tips on the following:
Visas and passports
Currencies
Credit cards and other types of cards
Languages
Mobile phones and SIM cards
Hiring or renting vehicles
Purchasing motorhomes
Road rules and parking rules for drivers

I can remember taking a 2 litre Cortina up in the early seventies, no real problem in daily traffic that occurred going back down. Ever tried to match a Fiat 500 in bottom cog with enough oncoming traffic to prevent overtaking! Brakes were smouldering at bottom and had to wait for 20 mins to recover them! Fiat oh that was OK!

No footage of the race, then - just shots of static cars and a fleeting glimpse of the Auto Union type C.
