How to Prime miniatures so you can get through that huge pile of shame is one of the things that slows us down. But what if there was a whole host of ways to prime so you can actually get things done quickly.

You don't always have to prime every miniature in black. In fact, I'd actively urge you not to. Try priming in multiple colours, try slapchop, try multi colour rattlecan spraying.

Stop thinking of priming as a first sticky layer of paint and think of it as you first colour layer instead!

  • I came for the video on primer and stayed for what proved to be ONE OF THE BEST TUTORIALS ON APPLIED COLOR THEORY I HAVE EVER WATCHED. HOLY COW.

I've seen a couple of these "color zenithal" vids (including Jon's) but the "how" wasn't explained well. This finally broke through my brain fog. Your on-screen graphics were absolute gold. Your explanation was terrific. Your insights into why we do illogical steps was spot-on. It hurt, but I needed to hear it.
  • @Primordian-P
This video was relatable, and motivational. After using an airbrush, I'd say that batch painting miniatures without an airbrush feels like painting a wall with a toothbrush.
  • @ajemma78
Sometimes the internet is a fabulous place. I just got my studio cleaned up, my airbrush cleaned out ready to go, and a whole tray of clan rats that need to be primed and painted...what amazing timing. Your original airbrushing video convinced me to get one in the first place (Ultra 2024 again thanks to you.) Thank you so much.
  • @Kakashi-ip8mg
I thought I was getting a simple video on what I thought I was knowledgeable in, and I got schooled by a genius. Sub earned

"Brush on primer is like Star Wars the Acolyte." You sir, are the hero this hour needs.
  • Love this video and your honesty. Whenever I hear "you can do this with a rattlecan/brush too!" my eyes roll back so hard my optic nerves sever. It will be nice when youtubers stop back peddling and just stand behind the tools they use. Have some backbone and don't be afraid to piss off the small minority of stubborn people that refuse to get an airbrush.
  • @ex0ne
Ha, you mentioned The Acolyte, and the video got interrupted with an ad for... The Acolyte! Foil hats on, guys! πŸ˜…
  • Binge watching multiple videos a day. Never until now I saved a video to rewatch. You’re a wizard.
  • @ElRammo
The quality of your videos is insane. Pivoted from YouTube on the console to my phone just to make sure you get the love you deserve. I follow a lot of other channels intermittently and your commentary making some of the colour theory feel relevant and accessible is just quality. You seem like an absolute pro!
  • This is one of those things that the fine scale modelers do well and that the miniature gaming world could learn from. I was a fine scale modeler long before I got into wargaming and I’ve always considered primer color before painting my little dudes because of that. Like the video mentioned, I too always just thought it was a lazy aspect of miniature painters wanting to get armies on the table as fast as they can. I’m now wondering if it is a lack of awareness of such techniques. I often see miniature painters β€œdiscover” something like it is some brand new technique that never existed. I’m looking at you SlapChop enjoyers. I’d encourage wargamers to explore fine scale modeler channels and even the model railroader channels. You can learn a lot from those folks and even learn techniques that they have been doing for decades. Techniques that should have been a thing long ago in this hobby.
  • @marcbennett9232
I used to paint figures some 25 years ago, and we always primed white. I remember when people first started recommending priming black, and when colored primers started becoming available. I personally only prime black if im painting predominantly metal or black, otherwise I will prime white or my base color.
  • I sat on my airbrush for years and started a few days ago and omg what was I waiting for ... So smooth, so easy love it !
  • @virrcraft
yay, new video! wow, this is so impressive to watch... and at the same time so difficult! my brain started racing 5 times while I was watching it all... and this despite the fact that I already knew a good 60 percent... but don’t get me wrong, it’s not about the presentation, it’s about the material! it’s quite complex (if you’re not in the know), but it’s presented just beautifully! color theory haunts me throughout my life, but I try to avoid it... apparently it has won after all. I need to sit down, figure it out and... hang circles with flowers around my work area
  • @TheHunch8ack
Christ, the YouTube algorithm actually came through for once. Instead of throwing me ridiculous videos of Yanks shouting at each other it's everything I needed to know just before I unpack (after buying it four years ago . . . ahem) my airbrush! Cheers!
  • @Politov
Helldunkel is my new name for it from now on. Thanks for that πŸ˜‚
  • @jokenarts8312
Awesome hidden tip, using a Lego plate for a dry brush test! Very cool!
  • @NegativeNezzy
I lost it at "a little bit like the acolyte" lmfao. My loves are intersecting.
