DIY Island Clock with Resin, Plaster, and Paint

Published 2024-02-05
Evan had a dream about an island themed clock diorama covered in resin, so we busted out our laser cutter, some quick drying plaster, and our acrylic paints to make it happen! Make sure to watch till the end because when we added the bird flying above, the whole clock REALLY came together. Check out the tools we used below! šŸ‘‡

tidal islands are totally a thing, so the submerged islands arent weird at all - this clock is just at high tide! the trees can be mangrove trees or something. anyway this is gorgeous and it would be fun to see yā€™all do more miniature stuff like this if you find it fun!
  • @seviebrac1
You need to read the Abarat book series. It takes place in a world where each island is a different hour of the day. There is a 3 PM island, a midnight island. A 6 am island.
  • @Ni5ei
Looks great. How about using clear acrylic for the seconds hand so all you see is the flying seagull?

I would still love to see a fully resin chessboard and chess pieces from y'all. The pieces could have those wireless LEDs and the board could have a copper coil hidden in it so the pieces light up while in play and then when they are slain the light goes out!

I love how Katelyn has more experience in graphical design, artistic side of things and Evan seems more experienced at power tools and working with materials etc. They make the perfect crafting team :face-red-heart-shape:

In the sense of geology this is a huge volcano that blew up and collapse back into the sea except for a ring of small island that marked the original mountain/caldera and then over a passage of a hundred years or so the center island grew up in the crater in the center and grew above the waves.

0:39 "We're gonna pour resin over the oceans". At last your dastardly plan has been revealed, I always knew you were plotting something...
  • @_alexrowland
Now whatever time it is, you can just point to the clock and say "it's Island Time" (meaning sort of joyfully relaxed vibes for scheduling events, like "it'll happen when it happens, let's take it as it comes šŸ˜Ž")

Hereā€™s a nice trick for adding rock texture to plaster/clay: crumple up a ball of aluminum foil and push it lightly into the surface as much as you want. Works way better than we can achieve with a brush.
  • As a cool suggestion, you could use mod podge or clear silicone caulking over hardened resin to create really nice water effects and then lightly dry brush the tips with white to create the crashing waves. This clock is beautiful and would totally buy it!!
  • @jenbelowzero
The casual pacing of this project really defines "island time"

Watching miniature making is very satisfying. Miniature-makers look like gods shaping the existence of a new world. Such an interesting effect. You can almost see the miniature inhabitants venerating their benefactors. This turned out beautiful.
  • @shanegibbens
Love to see a epic d&d dice tray made like this with a top down view of a dragon breathing fire over a fortress and micro leds to light up appropriate areas!
  • @Whippeful
I knew you had a lot of channels, but I didn't know about the "Evan and Katelyn Ooh i dropped the cap in the paint" before 52:35
  • huh, an island formation like this makes me think of a huge underwater volcano, the outer islands are the rim, and the middle island is where the magma/lava boils up.
  • @keikiicake6370
A Snake Discovery/E&K crossover is exactly what I would love.
  • @mossy2313
Watching you fix a technical issue in real time was truly exhilarating
  • @Khunai.
Choochoo, this butt is from Colorado lmfao This clock turned out sooo cool!! 10/10 one of my favorite projects so far
  • When I'm making something with plaster of paris, I put it in a snack or sandwich bag, and pipe it where I want it. Then I adjust it as needed. It gives you more control. šŸ˜Š
