I always want to take an emotional performance over a studio version of a song if I can help it, and this is one of those instances. I am overjoyed I got to hear and feel Chester's pain in this performance of "Given Up" by Linkin Park. So chilling, and so revealing!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Linkin Park performing "Given UP" for the first time.

  • It's not a character, it's HIM. That's the sad part. His suicide shocked everyone, but he'd been telling us how he'd been feeling from the very beginning. Those emotions were 100% real and 100% his. He didn't need to act anything out, and that's what makes listening to his music that much more gut wrenching now that he's gone. It wasn't acting, it was catharsis.
  • Ever since Chester passed no song sounds the same as it used to. Every single song he wrote was a cry for help while the songs he wrote were salvation for many of us. As I saw in another comment, "1 man saved millions, but millions couldn't save 1 man. RIP Chester..
  • Songs like this hit so much harder because it wasn’t an act he was singing about his feelings … rest in paradise Chester

As a child psychiatrist who hasnt listened to linkin park i about 15 years, it amazes me how pure and honest Chesters expression of raw emotional pain is. So tragic he didnt find the help he needed. I hope you found peace chester.
  • @az3412
The live cover Chester did of Rolling in the Deep with only Mike behind him on piano is amazing. He poured his heart into everything.
  • @clonexx
The thing is, with Chester, it’s not a character, it’s actually him. When he hits himself in the head, it’s not an act…it’s how he actually feels. It’s the reason he’s no longer here, and it’s not only tragic, but a massive loss to music.
  • He actually lost the scream this time and had to break when he dropped down - normally he carries it through before going back to clean. However, this is the most emotional performance I've seen from Chester - and that's saying something. It's understandable that his technique would slip slightly. I can't imagine the headspace he was in. He gave 110% to every single performance both physically and mentally.
  • @aftersolo
Rest in peace, brother. You helped me through a miserable childhood.
  • Every time he sings, you hear him go from being youthful and almost scared, to being angry. And it’s just sad how 1 man could save millions but not himself
  • The magic of Linkin Park was that all their lyrics were relatable to anybody who is/was struggling with something. Chester basically took the bullet to help so many souls who feel/felt lost in life. It's heartbreaking he couldn't win his battle with life, I just hope he's in a better place. He was one of a kind. Love to everybody in the LP family. 🙏🏻❤️
  • He wasn't acting, he was trying to spit the poison out. He drew it out of hundreds of thousands of us instead. Ty Chester.
  • Chester never needed to get in "character" he was always in character sadly. he was the voice that a LOOOT of us didn't have. one of my fave Linkin Park song
  • The craziest part is if you watch the AOL live sessions of this song he actually holds the ENTIRE scream instead of stopping for breath. Absolutely wild. Miss him so much and this is the song that hurts the most
  • @Kbsnflwr
I’m crying. Chester hitting his head wasn’t outward in. That was from his soul. RIP Chester ❤️🌻
  • @NozdormusRage
People always bemoaned those artists from the bygone years of the early and late 2000's, saying they were just attention seekers, but people like Chester prove that wrong. They suffered and wrote about it. Their lyrics weren't cheesy or manufactured, but real cries for help. It's sad, but here we are.
  • When you realize he wasn't acting. He was just telling us how his life actually was. And this is why we love Chester. So real, brutally honest and open. RiP Chester 💔
  • Chester had exceptional control of his extreme vocal techniques, he was doing his screams in a safe and healthy manner. They gave 300 concerts a year and he still performed excellent without a break or a trauma (except that time when he broke his hand falling from the high rack in the beginning of a song and still performed it fully without a break and then finished the full concert as planned)
  • Hearing him sing this actually brought me to tears. Haven't heard this song in so long I forgot the emotional pain that was present in his voice. RIP Chester.
  • I didn’t realize until now I’ve actively avoided listening to Linkin Park since Chester passed away.... now I know why. Fuck I’m gonna need some quiet time after this. I was able to find the peace while still being able to breathe that he never found himself. And his music helped me do that. I wish it helped him in the same way😢
