The reason it was so good is because it was developed by Sonic Team who at the time was still in their prime. I may be wrong but I also believe it was intended to be a new Sonic game originally before becoming its own.
-
You forgot to mention that it has a killer soundtrack.
-
I recently picked this game back up and finally beat it. It is now one of my favorite Genesis games. I cant believe the overlooked it back in the day when it came out. Some of the best music in a 16-bit game.
-
Im glad I had a chance to play this on the sonic mega collection on the Gamecube, even if it required the dumbest methods to unlock. Never did beat the final boss though, that guy was balls to walls hard.
-
Also this game's water level is one of the best that I've ever seen. Generally water levels are pretty crappy, but in Ristar they nailed it
-
As a Minnesotan I laughed more than I should at the hotdish line

Finally, someone who pronounces Ristar the way I do rather than "Rye-star" :P Also failed to mention this has one of the best OST's on the genesis!
-
The moment you mentioned Buck Bumble the damn theme song started playing in my head.
-
My favourite and one of the best for mega drive /genesis
-
+1 for the mock Minnesota accent
-
Glad you played it too. Ristar is very under appreciated and deserves to be mentioned with the best 16-bit platformers. Just recently, Norm The Video Game Historian did a really nice piece on this game. Its worth checking out for sure. Lots of great info about its history and development.

This is a great game. I have it on the Sonic's Sega Genesis Classics compilation. I was actually just playing this earlier today to unwind after I took my kids to school.
-
I played this game for the first time today on the most recent at games genesis classic console and immediately knew it was serious business.
-
It's criminal that this game never received a sequel or remake.
-
it's incredible how fondly remembered this game is especially considering how late it came out in the Genesis lifespan yet somehow they've never made any sequels of this game. did it possibly not sell while at first because of how late it came out and the Genesis lifespan but now is being fondly remembered years later? I don't know, but I would love to see another game in this franchise and not just have the character used as the guy who holds the checkered flag in the Sonic & All Stars racing games
-
I had this on Game Gear since I was little; I finally got to try the Genesis version years later via Sega/Sonic compilations
-
Nice review. This game looks pretty good. I missed out on a lot of the later games when I sold my Genesis to buy a Super Nintendo.
-
I’ve been looking for a copy of this game for years. Edit: I got a copy for Christmas

Loved that Minnesota accent
-
great game for sure
