The Kalaidzhi bride market takes place in the southeast of Bulgaria every year. Unmarried women are often paired off with financially strong men.

But more and more young Roma are rebelling against the old tradition. For young Kalaidzhi the annual bride market at Bachkovo Monastery is the only chance to find a partner. Their Orthodox Christian faith and traditional code of conduct prohibit them from dating, flirting or having any other pre-marital relations. The Kalaidzhi - a name meaning tinsmiths or boilermakers - marry only within the group. Finding a spouse from outside - and in particular a non-Roma Bulgarian - is out of the question. Love is only a secondary consideration. What matters is the dowry. A growing number of young Roma, however, are rebelling against the traditional marriage market. They want to make their own decisions, and to love and marry the person of their choice. For girls especially - some as young as 15 when they are put up for marriage - the wedding is the end of self-determined life. They will subsequently be housewives and mothers. The film accompanies 17-year-old Teni and 19-year-old Maria in the week before the market day. For them it means buying a lot of new clothes and masses of other preparations. Can this be a way to find true love? And how is the outdated ritual affected by the Internet and social media?

  • During quarantine, I have travelled the world watching these documentaries.
  • My best friend who was Roma was sold at 10 years old she just disappeared one day from school and no one cared I went out looking for her and found out from some of her siblings the man took her to a different country. I still look for her on social media 14 years later but I don’t even know her last name or if she is alive. She wasn’t the fists girl to disappear a 8yo form a different family was also sold. I know these Roma are different from her family but it still disgusts me that a family would do that to their child. I really hope she is alive and well and maybe we will meet again.
  • The fact that we get free documentaries on YouTube by DW Documentary is truly a gift 👍 👍 👍

"you're pretty enough. you'll find a husband lets go" LOOOOL
  • I would never have been able to afford my wife no matter how hard I worked and saved, she's priceless.
  • 6:23 he’s such a great husband, generous with the complements and respect for his wife, in public no less.
  • The documentary is beautiful and non judgemental. Please create more features like this one. I have been to Bulgaria many times to visit my parents - in -law, and this brought rosy memories back.

As a Bulgarian (not Roma) I can say that once in 1990 I was offered to buy such a Roma wife. The "seller" was her brother with whom we were serving together our military service. The price was about 1500 DM, which later became 750 EUR. I usually don't like Roma women, but that one was really, really beautiful. But this was out of question - my family traditions don't permit such thing, so this never went further than a joke and exchanging some nice smiles.

I love this documentary!!! Great, educational, enertaining, fascinating!!! DW Rules!!!🙌
  • Huge fan of the way the young guy decided his blue t-shirt with black words wasn’t good enough and that he needed another blue t-shirt with black words for the event
  • "Why is it taking so long? You are already pretty?" OMG. Men all over the world use this.
  • I know that this is an unusual method of finding love, to those of us in western countries anyway. But I really do hope that these two young people find partners that make them happy! Teni seems like a hard worker who is prepared to support his future wife and children. He also has much respect for his family. Maria seems to be very sweet and kind and she’d make a good wife and mother. Both of these young people have so much respect and I truly wish them the best!
  • Watching this documentary is like traveling the world, knowing their culture, life etc. Thankyou DW DOCU.
  • Can we just take a moment and appreciate how long her hair is
  • It's kinda funny that in some countries the husband pays the family for his bride, and in other cultures the family pays a husband to take the bride off their hands

This illuminates the struggle of young Roma against an age-old tradition. Their quest for love and self-determination is both inspiring and thought-provoking. Thanks to DW Documentary for sharing this compelling story of change and hope.
