A beautiful mind seemingly bent on destroying itself. These are Shane MacGowan's best and worst moments; sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the two.

"Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan (born 25 December 1957) is an English-born Irish singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Celtic punk band the Pogues. He was also a member of the Nipple Erectors and Shane MacGowan and the Popes, as well as producing his own solo material and working on collaborations with artists such as Kirsty MacColl, Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, Steve Earle, Sinéad O'Connor, and Ronnie Drew."

Update 30/11/23: I have just learned of Shane's passing. The world is a lesser place without his devious creativity and raw lyricism. If you've never listened to his work, here's a song to get you started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4v6aNjGFFk&ab_channel=ThePoguesOfficial Second Channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCt93hxFmjppL5nLRAX94UrA Merch: teespring.com/stores/qxir Patreon: www.patreon.com/qxir Twitter: twitter.com/QxirYT Discord: discord.gg/jZzvvwJ Twitch: www.twitch.tv/qxiryt/ Subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/Qxir/

I know lads like this that are easy to love at a respectful distance.
  • @glame9001
I remember coming across the song "Dirty Old Town" and felt drunk just listening to it.

Rest well, Shane. Every Christmas your voice will be heard by generations to come 🙏
  • My mates' band was supporting him in Nottingham about 20 years ago. He went missing so they had all his staff go looking for him in all the pubs in the vicinity. They found him in one slumped having drunk the bar dry. They carried him up onstage and he did a flawless 2 hr set. Straight after the last song, he slumped again and his people carried him off. Legend!

can't understand him while he speaks, but he moment he starts singing I can get every single word
  • My nan loved the pogues! It definitely was out of place amongst her other records!!

I just attended Shane’s funeral mass in Nenagh, beautiful ceremony for one of Irelands greatest sons. The most genuine man ever to grace this earth. Farewell McGowan, I,ll never forget you ❤
  • @9lorac
I had the privilege of seeing Shane and the Pogues twice. Once Shane forgot the words to a song. It didn't matter because we were all singing the lyrics and Shane remembered. 2 best concerts ever

"Everyone knows Bono, but over here we actually like Shane MacGowan." Holy fuck, that's the most subtly savage line this man's dropped in months.

Johnny Depp's inpersonation was on point 😄

The best Shane McGowan quote "I've never taken drugs in my life"...... later on in the conversation...... "So I was down at Alphabet City trying to score myself a speedball (heroin and cocaine combined)"........... "but you said that you'd never taken drugs in your life?"............. "Yeah but I never swore on my Mother's grave!"
  • Rest in peace you warrior-poet. From the dark streets of London to the dirty old town to the fairytale of New York, you'll always be with us, deep in our hearts.
  • Say what you want about shane But there is no denying that he is feckin hilarious and definitely an Irish national hero and a simply fantastic singer

I just can’t believe Shane macgowen is still alive 😂 I mean I’m glad he’s still around but jeez
  • I have to say thank you because today is the first time I ever heard the song fairytale of New York. The lyrics describe my relationship to my ex-wife, and I say that even though I don't drink. We've been divorced now for several years, yet the song left me in tears. So thank you for that..
  • @G-Mastah-Fash
The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn is the best drinking hymn ever! Love Shane, my dad used to get blackout drunk with me listening to these songs.

What a lad. Even though they're considered as just a band when that one talk show host goes to end, "Say their names now." It shows he really cares that those performers get proper recognition for their work. 👏

Came here after learning about Shane has left the stage, today. RIP, mate. Thanks for all the joy your music provided to me over the last decades, over and over again. And what a great summary about him in the video.
