Supreme Court in Bangladesh has dismissed a ruling by the High Court to reinstate a job quotas system.
In June, the High Court reinstated a system reserving 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence.
After violent protests this week, the Supreme Court suspended that ruling.
A nationwide curfew remains in place and has been extended 'indefinitely' as security services try to quell protests.
Detail on the top court's ruling will become clearer in the coming hours.
At least 114 people have been killed, and thousands injured in a violent crackdown by the police and military.

  • But students in Bangladesh say it's not just about the quota movement. Who will take responsibility for the atrocities the government has inflicted on our students, and the lives that have been lost. So the government wants the resignation of all those who were involved in the sector and they should be brought under the law.
  • its not about quota anymore its about the blood of our innocent brothers. its about justice.
  • @mal_ed
The fact that there is a quota system in the first place is a sign of a corrupt government

Why no one is mentioning that “ The whole country’s communication system has been cut off so that they can’t share information about the situation and number of deaths to the people.

I am a Bangladeshi. Currently I am living in the Uk. There is not mobile network, internet connection, and Wi-Wi-Fi in our country. Since last three days I have no contact with my family in back home. The govt is killing the innocent students and ordinary people who are helping students. Almost 150 students were killed by Bangladesh government. Many students are Under 18. The government is doing genocide now. We want the resignation of current prime minister Shekh Hasina. I urge the United Nations and Human right organizations to help our students and save their lives.

It is a shame when a court’s verdict comes out of the government’s eye language. But why not, where the Chief Justice is appointed with the sympathy of the government.

It's a red herring: "The judgment said that since the matter is a matter of policy, the *executive department can make changes, extensions or reforms if necessary later on*. At the same time, the court has given instructions to issue the gazette within three months and inform the Appellate Division."
