Netflix did the impossible and made a live action adaptation everyone likes... so why didn't I?

Don't think you needed a hour just to say they cut Jango out

I actually completely agree with you on the Zoro point. I remember going in hoping that they would be able to capture his goofier and more laid back side but was really disappointed when we didn’t get that. Which is a shame because Zoro is my favorite character in OP.

My problem with the show is how they handle Usopp and Sanji in their respective arcs, Usopp spends most of his arc hiding in a closet and they remove Sanji's friendship with Gine, that and i think Nami is too deadpan in this show, deadpan works for Zoro but not Nami
  • I really hope they do not ignore the criticism as form of people just haying and for goodness sake give them more episodes.

What made the live action so good was that it wasn't afraid to be weird and embrace all the things that made One Piece so good. Even if some things aren't as good as others, it's still really good. In fact, people are now getting into the anime because of it, and I just love that so much! I watched it with my little brother. He didn’t like the anime, but after watching it with him, he not only rewatched the entirety of East Blue, but he's now on Skypiea and he's a massive fan thanks to the live action.

I really hope the second season has around 15 episodes because there is no way they can fit everything into less than 10 episodes.

From someone who discovered the wonderful world of One Piece from the live action, i really appreciate your insight as a fan of the original manga/anime.

"It's almost as if there was a time limit"... yes... that's how the medium of live action functions. That's one of the give and takes of doing live action to begin with. They had an 8 episode deal to get through the first season and hopefully not get the show canceled right away in the process and Oda was masterful enough to pull this off. If you wanted a beat for beat retelling of the manga or anime then why even do it in the first place? We already have those. Live action is always going to present strange background elements that add or even take from the source material. The goal is at the end of the day to be able to tell the story with the same moral or heart as the original. That's what makes the live action the third prong of One Piece. Manga, Anime, and Live Action. Three mediums that must deliver the story in radically different ways. From what I hear they've given the team more episodes per season because they've earned some trust so maybe things don't have to feel as rushed. But the first season could not have been any other way and functioned. Every decision was made with Oda's approval. I'd trust that he'd understand how to tell his story.

I think the live action was very well made, though I do have some gripes with the cut content, but I think they consolidated it well enough. Though I do wish it was like 4 episodes longer at least so there was a bit more fleshing out certain areas. I don't want the crazy amount of fluff the anime has, but I also don't want it to be rushed like the live action. There needs to be a middle ground, and hopefully they resolve this with season 2.
  • I never saw One Piece before I saw the Netflix show, and I still agree with you on quite a few points. Like how Usopp never felt like he got any focus, or how inane the twist with Garp testing Luffy was, and just how rushed everything feels.
  • About Coby's introduction: I just think they didn't want to call a woman fat and ugly in the show. Stuff like that doesn't really fly today. They should have had him stand up for himself in another way, instead of just not doing anything at all.
  • @skrillz_14th
Truly phenomenal the way you clearly expressed your feelings towards the show. No pun intended
  • @lillpluten
There is little to disagree with in this video. Though I 100% agree on Zoro (re-read East blue if you disagree).
  • @BrandonRTalks
This was actually a really solid video with a lot of great points that articulated some of my problems with the series as well, even though I didn’t watch much of the original One Piece. It's a shame this video didn't get more attention 😑
  • @Erif-
I came to terms that OPLA really was not made for me but my friend who started reading the manga and is now on wano because of the Live Action
  • It's not gonna be for everyone but the point is it captured the spirit of the original enough to please the fanbase. Which was all we ever really wanted.
  • @aguio3917
It's the curse problem plus with budgets, but seeing the curse hopefully broke The One Piece Live Action will get the exorbitant amount of budget
  • @concord9846
Diehard OP fan and I agree with the title, though I will say the final episode is absolute peak anime to live action, western or not. It's done what I believe all adaptions should strive for and what every fan of an adapted IP should have the privilege of experiencing at least once. That last episode, man. Lmao. To me, it really captured some of that emotion of OP that most fans may consider exclusive to it
  • Steven Maeda has actually said that they REALLY wanted to include Hachi, they even had a really cool fight scene for him planned out but he had to be cut due to budgetary limitations, it's a shame but it is understandable.
  • How about giving Zoro (and Usopp) real personality in later seasons? Wouldn't that be something?
