Tom Waits was born in Pomona, California, in 1949.
He worked at a pizza restaurant and a diner. In those joints, he got to know the patrons. He learned about their lives, and he wrote down things they said. That stuff influenced his songwriting.
In Los Angeles, he became friends with Sylvester Stallone. He appeared in Sly's movie Paradise Alley.
Then, Tom became friends with Francis Ford Coppola. Tom appeared in Coppola's movies The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, and Dracula.
In the 1970's, Tom dated Rickie Lee Jones and Bette Midler.
Tom began to be influenced by the great Captain Beefheart. Tom said: "Once you've heard Beefheart, it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood."
When Tom was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he said: "They say that I have no hits and that I'm difficult to work with. And they say that like it's a BAD thing!"
Tom acted in Wolfen, Mystery Men, Queens Logic, The Simpsons (voice), Down by Law, The Cotton Club, Ironweed, Candy Mountain, Mystery Train, The Fisher King, Coffee and Cigarettes, The Two Jakes, Short Cuts, Twixt, and many other projects.
Tom has created many great albums, such as swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Blue Valentine, Bone Machine, and Frank's Wild Years.
