As India’s economy continues to grow, can the world’s most populous country truly replicate China's success of the past decades? Should India even imitate China? Maybe not, says our guest on this episode, Alicia García Herrero, Hong Kong-based Chief Economist for Asia-Pacific at French investment bank Natixis, and Senior Fellow at European think tank Breugel.

Alicia discusses the key differences between the two countries, talks about if the world is even looking for a new China, and provides insights on what economic policies could drive India’s continued growth, especially as the country enters a second decade under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Whether India will be the next China is debatable or unforeseeable, but one thing is certain.. US will be the next India in the near future..

India’s culture and customs are not the same as China. Therefore, India can only be the next India at best.

India should find its own way of development. There is no point in comparing with China.
  • Anywhere in the world, if there is a border dispute, it is usually the result of a line drawn by an Englishman; if it is an internal dispute, it is usually the US fueling it. Difference in implementation of divide and conquer strategy.
  • India's economy is very much controlled by oligarchies which affect too much on government policies.
  • This senseless comparison by the media & pitting China & India continuously is causing divisions, distrust & other problems. Both countries have their strengths & weaknesses; both can via trade & cultural exchanges benefit each other & the planet earth. Where there is a will there is a way.
  • For thousands of years in China, there was a saying . If you want to be rich , first you must build the roads. Infrastructure in China is decades ahead of India.
  • China's success is the result of capable and competent government and hard working people. Chinese government has successfully combined capitalist and communist systems and made a system that fits China's own tradition, culture and development stage. China's step by step, region by region approach worked very well. China's flexibility and versatile economic policies are also the key factor for China's success. Chinese government is a very much people oriented government who puts the needs of its people at first priority. Every step of the economic development in China, benefits to its people always put on as first priority. That is the reason, all Chinese people have been benefited tremendously from China's development and modernization took place in the last 40 years or so. China has lifted extreme poverty in the country. This is a great contribution not only for China but for the world. China does not need assistance from UN on food products but India does. China took away the burden from UN. Unlike the West who got rich and powerful by invading, looting, genocide and destroying other countries, rising China did not do any of that.
  • When a foreign company is looking for building a new factory, or new office somewhere in China, the local government/bureau (depends on the size of that company) will mostly come to aid and help that company in every possible way so it can operate softly, with all kinds of infrastrutures. When a foreign company is looking for building a new factory, or new office somewhere in India, every local bureau senses corrupted money, they will let you grow a bit for a period of time and then harvest and squeeze you in every possible way, with shortage of electric power and water supply. And that's only a fraction of the differences.
  • India 's system of governance is facism, never democracy. You simply don't send "buttonmen" to target non voters and polical opponents. 1) did a 8 x Bollywood MI6 in Qatar? 2) did a "Hardeep Singh Nijjar" in Canada? 3) did a "Nikhil Gupta" in USA? 4) did a "Constable Chetan Singh" to the non voters in India? Constable Chetan Singh: If you want to live and vote in |ndia, I am telling you it's only Modi or Yogi......or ELSE how many more "buttonmen" has he got to "fix" his political opponents and non voters? These facts should tell you whether the Indian voting process is fair.

As a Chinese, I am well aware of how hard and long the road of development is. At present, we have been on a parge with Western countries, but this is not enough. We have to surpass them, step on their backs, and repay them for what they have done to us in the past. We will not wait for you Indians, but we sincerely hope that you will catch up one day and leave Indian footprints on the backs of those Western countries. Then, we spent a long time writing unique stories between China and India.

China understands the world so it has a global and larger world vision. Its policies complement to be in balance and harmony with the world. China intends to help the world and the world wants to grow with China. This is a Buddhist, Confucius, and Asian philosophy. 😊❤👍🙏
  • The economic crisis is really worrying, especially with everything going on in the global economy.

Oh purleez...Why compare India with China? India is not in the same league as China in. Best comparision for India is likely with Indonesia or Nigeria.
  • @catonpillow
Comparing India to Сhina is like comparing Greece to Germany.

Progress is not just population and GDP numbers. It's how the real population, the common folks, benefit from such growth. India is still inundated by the poor all over the country. Only the rich and some middle class benefit from india's growth. You find beggars all over the place in india, creaking trains, buses and public transport, inefficient health systems, yawning gaps between social classes and many other ills.
  • Moody's credit rating: China: A1 whereas India: Baa3 Standard & Poor's credit rating: China: A+ whereas India: BBB- Fitch Ratings credit rating: China: A+ whereas India: BBB- BBB- or Baa3 status = lowest grade rating for investment, just 1 or 2 levels above junk status. 😆😅🤣😂 People need to read up these embarrassing news headlines: 1) Moody’s retains India’s BAA3 rating despite government’s pitch for upgrade (India Today) 2) S&P Global Ratings on July 13 affirmed India’s sovereign rating at the lowest investment grade of ‘BBB-’ for the 14th year in a row (TheHindu) 3) Fitch retains India's rating at 'BBB-' as growth potential fights high deficit concerns (The Economic Times)

I am a Chinese born in 1991. When I was in elementary school (probably from 1997 to 2003), most of the people around me and I were very poor. I didn’t even have money to pay for my school fees, clothes, shoes, and school bags. It's also in tatters. As for my child, she now has a life that I could not imagine before. I have experienced the most rapid era of discovery in China. However, we are only a developing country and there are still many problems. We need to continue to work hard, study hard, work hard, and improve our lives. I believe we will all get better and better.
  • China doesn't need routine elections. This allows their govt to set truly long term goals and objectives. India is a political melting pot. Modi barley scraped home recently. India can never unite long enough to overcome a multitude of intenal conflicts and set long term goals and objectives. India still has a colonised mindset. They are always looking for someone to bow down to. They need to educate, house and employ their 550 MILLION Dalits. Until that happens, they have no chance of becoming a truly united superpower ike China.
