Playing a HORDE (300+ Guardsmen) List at a GT.

I really like these kinds of recaps where you use the pictures to highlight whats happening on the table!

As a guy who plays this many guardsmen or at least 200 I find my opponent cannot deal with the sheer amount of wounds I have. My 6 squads of 20 Kriegers and my 3 Kasrkrins and my 3 squads 25 of lascannon bearing infantryman tend to play amazingly even with the reduction of numbers of shots since 8th and 9th. I only really struggle if the opponent can lock me in combat because I'm happy to fall back and let another squad shoot and I'll normally be in rapid fire range my opponent will just die to volleys of plasma and psyker goodness.

So you're saying guard tactics of just throwing bodies at the problem works

You can fit a max of 335 guardsmen in an army list he was not min maxing his waves of guard but that list is a lot more technical. Also it’s so cool to see 2 of my favorite warhammer YouTubers going up against eachother it’s simply glorious.

It sounds like you played against Mordian Glory. He runs lists exactly like this at tournaments. *edit: Yeah you played against Mordian Glory as he posted a pic matching that battlefield and his models use the exact same bases.

Great analysis, stuff like this really helps to show how the games go down. Assault intercessors are a great unit for killing loads of chaff like this for a pretty small investment. I run mephiston and 5 of them in my sons of sanguinius list. the unit isnt as good in a gladius admittedly but I find it to be a top performer in most games by being unable for most things to charge it. when they have been charged the unit will kill 10 guardsmen and when they charge its 12 mephiston makes it 14 and 17 The unit does a lot more than just kill chaff but in a game like this it would be probably your second best unit for only 190 pts

Great summary John, much appreciated! I reckon two DCs with Power Fists and Hand Flamers maybe a way to go for tourney flexibility if you come up against horde again…😅

This is why I always laugh when people say or complain big model lists or armies are the only stat check bs in the game. Horde spam list is just as stat checky as a group of knights. It just feels better because you're killing lots of units. But if you don't have loads of blast or sweep, it's just as impossible as going against a bunch of highly durable targets with no anti-tank/monster.

Just a note for getting cp back when using the reinforcements strategem i dont think thats actually possible. The reason he rolls to get the cp back is due to the vpx caster wargear option but if the units destroyed then technically that model is no longer in play. Im not sure if there is an faq for this but it seems like there should be!

As more of a casual player, I’d love nothing more than to run into a list like this. My DC, Baal predator, and LC terminators would absolutely feast, and even my tactical marines could rack up some kills.

Infiltrators may have done work here to prevent him getting Into your deployment? They seem to do a lot for me I tend to run 2 squads and it keeps my DZ safe all game and denies corner scoring objectives as well
