Top 10 90s Software

The software we mostly used in the 1990s!

MSN Messenger
Microsoft came out with this instant messenger in the 90s. It proved to be very popular worldwide, but not so much in my local region.

AIM
AOL Instant Messenger AKA AIM became a US phenomenon. Kids would come home from school and check their "away" messages. I remember spending hours and hours chatting with friends with this program.

Winzip
If you were serious about the Internet, you needed Winzip to open the zip files floating around all over the place online.

Winamp
Anyone who was cool and listened to music on their computers used Winamp. Very speedy and really simple!

Netscape
Fond memories suring the web with this browser. It ended up dying because of Microsoft's browser monopoly.

Internet Explorer 5
By the time Internet Explorer hit version 5, everyone was using it on Windows. Most of the late 90s until the early 00s used Internet Explorer 5 and 6.

Mac OS 8
If your family wasn't on Windows, they were on Macs. My family had an old Mac and my mom used a Powerbook for work. The biggest frustration was trying to figure out why some files wouldn't open from the Internet.

Office 97
If you wanted to do word documents, you needed Microsoft Word. If you wanted to make a presentation for school, you needed Powerpoint. Office 97 was really fast and the last known good version of Microsoft Office.

AOL 4.0
When America Online hit 4.0, it became mainstream and many people all over the US used it. Many kids that used it didn't know any better. AOL to them WAS the Internet.

Windows 98
Improving on Windows 95, Windows 98 went on to be the most popular operating system until it was surpassed by Windows XP. Windows 98 crashed sometimes, but it was fast and really where WIndows gaming took off.

Anyone else think that software peaks when it is usable and simple? It gets worse as it gets overly complicated. Nobody needs anything more than Office 97. It was perfect.. the stupid ribbon, more and more features I'll never use.. Its too much now. I dread to think I'd have to learn to use it now. Browsers have gotten better by being simpler. Chrome is literally a search bar and bookmarks.. everything stripped out and you can use extensions if you want. Facebook RUINED instant messaging. It's like we went back to voicemail instead of talking to people. MSN was awesome.. actual chat with people. Facebook just bloated up the online experience with friends. Do I need to share everything with people all the time.. nope. I'd organise a meeting or a party with friends, go and take some digital photos on a night out, zip them up and MSN them to friends the next day.. not post them all up for the world to see. There was just the right amount of privacy back then, It's like everything is an open book now. You can google someones name and get far too much information back on them

I love old UI design so much it's mostly because today minimalistic UI design is absolutely soulless, when it was not so widespread and was only in some applications it was not that bad but after some time i just got tired of it, everything looks same, boring... like there is 0 work behind it rather just some library and AI or guy who just did few clicks and UI was done.

I tried using netscape again a few months ago. It still works, but I got constant error messages because it isn't compatible with the new HTML/CSS/Javascript/PHP and can't display any of it
