Barbarian king gets the largest stat boost out of all heroes when upgrading him, even at later levels. For comparison: Lvl 80 AQ has 714 DPS. If you upgrade her to level 81, she gets 3 extra DPS (0,4% boost). Lvl 80 king has 506 DPS. If you upgrade him to level 81, he gets 7 extra DPS (1,4% boost, over 3x more)

I think The Phoenix also gave the King with Gauntled his shine, making "King Smashes" more versatile and Noob Friendly. Also, the king is the hero whose stats increse more with the levels, making the new hero levels coming from new THs rising his strength considerably.
