I have read a story in my childhood. There was such earthen dam, oneday it is flooded and the villagers came to know that the damn got a small hole but they knew it would be greater if they do not fix it before the time. People rush to the dam and started to deposit soil against the wall bringing from surrounding, by the time they feel it is done, the soil was washed away because the lickeage did not stop inside it. Seeing this a young boy goes and trap the small hole with his thumb and urge the people to deposit soil and mud quickly. People saw it is fixed and they started cheering uo but by the time people realised it was late for the young man who was trapped inside by the deposited soil.

Hey let's all stand as close as possible to the edge of the area being washed away by the flooding. Apparently lack of common sense is universal.
