I use "STAINLESS" steel electrodes with a little sodium hydroxide in the water. I run it at 5V or less at 20A and I have never had any problems. The water is always clear. There is no chlorine to corrode the electrodes.

Would be nice to see some figures for how much hydrogen was produced for a given energy input and how long that took. I've been thinking of building one to create hydrogen to use as a lifting gas for a small high altitude balloon transmitter

That's EXACTLY what you must NOT do which is raise the voltage. Keep the voltage low! You need a high current.
