Most viewers would need no introduction to Bishop Robert Barron. He is a the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the Catholic Church. He's also an author, speaker, theologian, and founder of Word on Fire, a global media ministry.

I finally had the opportunity to talk with him in the wake of the recent "Four Horsemen of Meaning" discussion on Jordan Peterson's channel (linked below). We discuss the current opening up in culture and return to topics like meaning and the more mystical and participative aspects of Christianity. The problems of atheism, iconoclasm, social justice, ethics, the critical historical approach to religion, addiction and finally the church fathers that have inspired us.

  • I'm glad to be young during this rejuvenation of Christianity. I hope it lasts and I hope I can contribute to it somehow.
  • So cool that you and the bishop continue the horsemen of meaning conversation. Man you are spoiling us Jonathan! Thank you so much for your work! Hope for more civilised Catholic and Orthodox conversations like this, it gives us hope!
  • BB has single-handedly opened the door to Catholicism for this stodgy young atheist. I love his videos and his teddy-bear personality. Great to see him dialoguing with greats like Pageau and Peterson and Vervaeke. The Four Horsemen of Meaning has an awesome ring to it. What a great counter to the horrid New Atheism moniker from last decade.
  • Now I can't keep up! Glad YouTube stores these things :) Glad this happened.
  • As a catholic I love entering an Orthodox Church much more than in our modern churches and I see the way they behave in their churches transmits the sense of sacred which we lost
  • I am 52 and you guys saved my Spiritual Life
  • So grateful for Bishop Barron and Jonathan Pageau. I'm in my mid 20's in Australia and I feel like my generation/culture lacks so much meaning
  • 'Everyone is worshipping Baal' based Bishop. This was a high quality interviewee, very knowledgeable.

Coming from a mostly southern baptist background, I’ve been overwhelmingly attracted the past few years to the seemingly more passionate and heartfelt worship and loving kindness of Catholic and Orthodox believers. Thank you both so much for your obedience and outward representation of love for God.
  • Bishop, as a new Catholic who was led to the Church through lessons from Jonathan, I was very heartened to hear your thoughts in this conversation. Thank you. Let’s hope the church continues to wake up to these things.
  • I’m an evangelical pastor who pastors in an old Orthodox Roman Catholic Church building. I look at the old photos of the church and mourn the loss off the beauty of the spiritual art work that was painted over. I also deeply appreciate the cathedrals of Europe the beauty of the creative church space needs to be restored. Another thought as to spiritual art is that it also helped the largely illiterate masses to visualize the biblical stories through the centuries. Thank you for the the great conversation. I love this cross Christian dialogue.
  • I can not put into words how excited I am to watch this
  • The Four Horsemen of Meaning would be an incredible weekly podcast. I would pay to listen to you guys discuss every week or month. 😂😂 Thanks Jonathan and Bishop Barron for all you do. I love you all so much! God bless🙏☦️
  • Jordan and Camille Paglia's discussion was instrumental in breaking me of my militant atheism, feminism, and satanism, bringing me back to the Catholic Church. I idolized the "Four Horsemen of Atheism." However, I have since graduated onto E. Michael Jones, Fr. Ripperger, Robert Sungenis, and Archbishop Vigano for guidance in these troubling times, outside of prayer, the TLM, and the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, of course.
  • Pageau at 26:29 "...the first you give up to God, and then you care for the poor. Those are not opposites, right, they don't contradict each other. Actually, one leads to the other. Because if you just create a kind of social justice mesh or this kind of social justice thing, it becomes totally open to corruption. If you dont have the highest ideal first, then, the other thing becomes a system. And I've seen it, I've worked in Africa and kind of charity work for several years and some of it was just monstrous. Just because you give money doesnt mean that it does what you think it does. If all your attention isn't oriented to something which is actually judging you, people hate to hear that, but judging you in the sense that it's the ultimate good to which you're looking, then the rest will fall apart at some point." This struck me so much and I had to listen to it a couple of times to really process it because there are really so many applications. I had a college professor about 10 years ago who was a physician from Romania. He told us that the reason communism doesn't work and is always twisted is because it's what happens when you try to do things without Christ. This also got me thinking about the nursing profession, since I am a nurse, and what it looks like to try to care for people and have integrity without believing in God or the image of Christ in that person. A lot to think about. I'm sure I'll come back to this concept often.
  • I thank our Lord for being able to watch both lungs of The Church breathing together, in this talk!
  • So glad Bishop Barron has finally given an interview on The symbolic world ✝️☦️
  • If I was dying of cancer and had a "make a wish" I am not exaggerating that my first request would be for the 4 horsemen to tour the world having these dialogos together!! If the philosophers of the past were alive today THIS is where they would be. Dear Pageau, Bishop, Peterson, Vervaeke. Please forsake whatever else would steal you from exploring these things together. You have been the access point for us to set our minds on things above. We need more of this!!

I was raised in the same era of Catholicism as you, Bishop Barron and was basically left to figure it all out on my own. I never left because, for some reason I intuited something that was much deeper than I, in my simplicity could comprehend, let alone express with words. I also sensed the flattening out that you have spoken of and knew that was the reason many Catholics were leaving. We were abandoning our own sacred traditions! Our parish recently built a new Church, replacing a stale, flattened out one and it is absolutely steeped in beauty and symbolism. It seems to me that it is now a place in space and time where we can come together as a community and direct our attention towards right worship at a cosmic, universal level, with God our creator as the source of all that is. Thank you both for working to educate the remnant so we can finally begin to put into words what we have deeply felt for many, many years!
