The Empire Could've Lasted a 1000 Years... if it did this

The Galactic Empire was in a terrific position post clone wars. It was presiding over a broken galaxy, that it alone could've repaired. In doing so they would've won the admiration of the citizens of the galaxy.

IMHO the Empire failed to last any meaningful length of time because: 1. Palpatine ran it like an a**hole instead of sensisbly 2. He was more focused on using Empire resources to study and restore lost Sith knowledge than doing his actual job as Emperor

The Empire should have been successful if they aren’t so full of themselves or doing their own thing for their personal gain. No wonder why they lost against the rebels.
  • If the Empire had spent money taken from the CIS to rebuild ruined worlds and encourage colonization and securing hyperspace routes then they could’ve explained they were increasing military expenses to protect their new investments.
  • How to design the Galactic Empire to be effective: 1 - Establish regional multi-planet districts. 2 - Assign an admiral to each district. 3 - Each planet within the district will provide a prorated share of the operational budget of any forces assigned there. 4 - Limit the duties of each admiral to the following: a - Maintain internal peace among the planets of the district. b - Maintain internal security within each planet. c - Suppress piracy and raiding. d - Defend the district against external threats. e - As necessary, join with other district fleets to combat wider threats. 5 - Rigorously police corruption among the admirals and their officers and staff. 6 - Allow each local government autonomy to rule as its people prefer, so long as they act in accord with the aforementioned steps. Addendum: Don't be ruled by a psychopathic space wizard whose ultimate goal is to destroy civilization from within.
  • Me lasting nearly 5-6 years longer than the Empire, that's quite the achievement for me. Thanks, my friend.

That title makes me wish a Tywin Lannister kind of character was in charge of the Empire. "The future of our Empire rests in this civil war. We could create an Empire that will last 1000 years... or we could fade into nothing, as the Sith did. I need all of you to be the Officers this Empire needs! Not next year, not tomorrow... NOW...!"

I’d imagine the Empire tax collection bureau was hilariously over-militarized to fund the forever war-economy. Either that, or Palpatine was minting more credits each year than the entire population of Coruscant.
  • 5:42 I favour Portugual's approach, by treating drug addiction as a public health issue. Without being overly harsh, drug use has actually reduced.
  • I always liked how in legends Palpatine was heavily militarizing the galaxy because of the yuuzhan vong threat outside the galaxy. It gave us an original motive by Plagueis and Palpatine as to how they justify their evil actions, because in their minds they were saving the galaxy. New cannon Palpatine has other reasons and justifications but I still prefer the legends reasoning.
  • I think people fail to realize that other than killing all the Jedi and making everyone miserable, because he's an asshole like that, Palpatine really didn't have a plan for the Empire other than to use it to fuel his ambitions to live forever.

    >The Empire could have lasted 1000 years if it didn't act like the Empire. Lmao

I always read these comments saying Palpatine was an idiot for how he ran the Empire, but he WANTED constant conflict, it was his Sith mantra. He knew the downside of Tarkins policies but he delighted in the fear and other dark side emotions it invoked in the galaxy.
  • I have the idea that this guy is some outer rim planet making a podcast about how "the empire has fallen" and bashing in the empire economic planning
  • The Empire also seriously jumped the gun on the oppression. Andor shows us, the Empire already passing unreasonable, arbitrary laws that strip any justice or fairness out of the judicial system. That kind of thing is going to piss everyone off and mean that people will start to rebel under the old adage of "we are already condemned to death so we might as well go down fighting". By arbitrarily arresting tourists on a tourist planet, the Empire probably ruined that planet's economy for decades. However, the Empire was not as firmly in charge as it would be by New Hope days. The Senate still had some power and IBS was still finding its legs as the secret police. If the Empire stayed more benevolent for another decade or two, it would have had a functioning Death Star and the Rebellion would just be starting and easily infiltrated and crushed. Palpatine and his minions were too arrogant and rushed things in their attempts to gain power in the Sith way.

As early as Heir to the Empire it was established that the Imperial forces largely consisted of law enforcement and military professionals who weren't entirely comfortable with Palpatine's megalomania or Vader's temper tantrums - they saw themselves as public servants maintaining order in society.
  • @filbergik
One simple explanation for why the Empire was ruled that way is that the Empire was just another means to an end for Palpatine. Creating a prosperous and stable civilization that would survive for a thousand years was never the plan, he just needed the resources of the Empire for something else. Perhaps it was the search for immortality or perhaps he wanted to bring back the sith empire, or perhaps it was something else, take your pick.

All the countries you quoted are tiny. It's much harder to implement and enforce those policies in huge countries with more land.

The Galactic Empire has survived 47 years as a centrepiece of pop culture and as the genesis of the trope of authoritarian space dictatorships in modern cinema. I'd wager more has been written about the Galactic Empire than most despotic regimes in history. Stormtroopers guard the toy boxes and bookshelves of more houses than any Army ever has. The sound of a TIE Fighter is probably more recognisable than the roar of an F-16 or Mig in most western countries. Most people could name the star destroyer but not tell a modern Aircraft carrier from a WW2 battleship. Disney's license fees for Star Wars merchandise earns them more than many nations GDP. Credit where credit's due- the idea of the Empire has penetrated our collective psyche enough that gen tech can make a living publishing years of videos criticising the empire's military, economic and foreign policies.
  • I love the inexplicable cheese block in the middle of the video
  • The Empire could have been great if it was fundamentally different and not built by and for psychopaths and sociopaths.
