  • A friend of my dad was a Vietnam War veteran and he was highly decorated. He would never talk about the war and was an alcoholic. My dad found him homeless eating a can of moldy Chef Boyardee ravioli and took him into our home. He was a great man and I considered him to be an uncle of mine. Taught me how to defend myself. Unfortunately my dad couldn't help him anymore and he lost his mind and I never saw him again. I miss him greatly his name was Scott Robins I will never forget him.

Rich people start wars. Poor people die for them. A cost seen as trivial to those who seek money and power.

Full Metal Jacket makes a lot more sense now.
  • @United1States
imagine being told youre fighting for your country just for them to call you morons later

I know a guy who had a bone spur and got out of the draft, then this same guy called a POW a looser and people clapped. Wtf

Johnson didnt lose to Nixon because he didnt run against Nixon in 1968, Hubert Humphrey lost to Nixon

My dad is a Vietnam vet and he dealt with PTSD for a long time. He used alcohol a lot. Like a lot. Within the last ten years or so he has finally started telling me some things and showing me some of his war stuff. But he did have this friend that he served with that was homeless. I remember he just walked around the country and every couple years or so he would show up at our house and him and dad would really tie one on and then he would leave again. I am proud my dad is a Vietnam vet and I do what I can to make him proud to be a Vietnam vet.

Drill Sergeant: GUUUUMP! Why did you put that weapon together so quickly? Gump: Because you told me to Drill Sergeant? 🤷🏻‍♂️
  • Ngl that title is a little… blunt. These are veterans were talking about here.💀
  • Always in recruiting, they needed the numbers. It’s always about numbers.

In case you missed it , The Gulf of Tonkin was a Fabrication. It was a pile of lies to give the DoD an excuse for deploying more forces.
  • Referred to as McNamara's morons. He should have been thrown in prison for it. So many wasted lives.

I'm glad that you mentioned the loss of life at Jackson State University. Most folks only focus on Kent State
  • When I was in basic training in the early 90s we had a soldier named Huelen he would get the entire platoon in trouble all the time like literally all the time well he was injured and went to the hospital and they were concerned about him and he ended up being mentally impaired his recruiter had lied on his paperwork to get him in the army he should never have been in that situation. We all felt bad about his treatment once we found out why he couldn't do much of anything right

The Vietnam war was oppressive not only to the Vietnamese but to the American youth. Lyndon Johnson wanted a victory by 1970. So they kept rapidly deploying soldiers. Instead of the typical 12-week boot camp, it was reduced to 8 weeks. Most of who were drafted were barely on their teens and did not yet really have enough life skills. It was only the middle to low income people who could not dodge the draft. Then the war dragged on because they did not expect that these barefooted peasants would actually be more determined to fight them back. Until it came to the point that even American citizens would denounce the US involvement on this war. So when the soldiers came back amptuated and with PTSD, Uncle Sam quickly threw them under the bus.

I was born in 1998. If I were born in Russia, I’d be in prison for draft evasion. Not everyone is a warrior

My grandpa got the South Vietnamese National Order medal, as a major in the Artillery units, his job was to clear out the villages for the infantry to come in, he told me he met two of the most well-known S. Vietnamese Presidents, Ngo Dinh Diem, and Nguyen Van Thieu, they both pinned the medals on my grandpa's uniform, in 1970 he was deployed to Cambodia to fight the Khmer Rouge, he served 17 years, during the Fall of Saigon, he was picked up from a hospital and directly to the border of Vietnam and China to a labor camp, where he said he could see China from his prison cell.

"McNamara's Morons" was a common term. Hamilton Gregory has a book on it and several speeches available on YouTube.
