This time I am going for a walk on the Old Bog road which is located just outside the village of Oughterard…This is a lovely, looped walk which brings us down to the main pier on the shores of Lough Corrib and from there we start our walk on the Old Bog road which brings us through bogland where they still cut turf.
The walk is easy underfoot and with children, this little walk is possible even if you have a child’s buggy you can do this walk. I normally start the walk at the main area where people keep their lake boats on the Owenriff river we walk down the river which brings us back around onto the small road leading down to the main pier at Oughterard and as I have said from the main pier we then enter the Old Bog walk the walk loops around cutting across bogland with Lough Corrib coming into view as we continue around. There is some woodland and a lovely area of Rhododendron which when in bloom is lovely also if you’re lucky you might even see the bog being cut this tradition stems back centuries but there is now a directive from Europe that all bog cutting must stop something which is not well received.
The walk is between 30-45 minutes and the loop brings us back around to the little road again from which you could walk up to the village for a cup of coffee or maybe even something to eat.
