What is behind their sudden bursts of energy? There's actually a science behind it.
It is quite a spectacle. Your pet can be chill one minute, then it's off to the races the next. A race against themself!
"They seem like they're possessed, right?" said Dr. Elsa Stuart of Millis Animal Hospital.
Wild-eyed, running, spinning, zooming in circles. Stuart explained, "They might tuck their tail under, might kind of tuck their butt under a bit. almost like another imaginary dog is chasing them."
Your dog is likely experiencing a case of the zoomies! There's a medical term for this goofy sprint that is so entertaining. "It's called a Frenetic Random Activity Period. FRAP for short," Stuart explained.
Stuart sees it all the time in her own dog, Winnie.

It’s for safety. Sometimes there’s a large buildup of cuteness that approaches dangerous levels and the cute safety valve vents it all at once to relieve pressure. It’s science.

I think Zoomies are pure un-inhibited joy

I thought dogs having the Zoomies meant that they are a Happy Happy Happy Boy, Happy Happy Happy Boy.

These are animals who originally chased prey to survive. They don't have to catch their own food anymore, but they still feel the need to let off steam.

It’s called PLAYING.

My dog only has the zoomies from 7:30 AM until 10:30 PM with random breaks for eating, marking, massages, and naps.

My dog always gets zoomies after a bath. 😂

Scientists: zoomies sounds too fun. We need a long elongated sciency term so we can study this and sound serious.

I love when our dog gets the zoomies! 😂😂😂
-
My cat gets them around sundown then the middle of the night. 😂

All animals do this even humans. We’ve just convinced ourselves to control it as adults or use the energy for something “more productive” than play. My tortoise gets the zoomies. She does laps around the house and has turned a cardboard box into a ramp that she uses as a treadmill. Tortoise zoomies don’t last a few minutes either. She’ll keep it up for hours in 15 minute intervals to one minute rests. Hey whatever works.

Very important story 😂 Love it! Cats do something similar only it's acrobatic moves.

Forgot to add to the list of causes of zoomies... "after poops".

One of my two cats gets the zoomies, too. It’s usually after using the cat box.

Cats often get the zoomies too.

My first beagle would get them after his evening walk. It was great because he’d tire himself out before bedtime.

Oh okay so anytime? Thanks, I can always count on the news to bring the heavy hitting facts 😅😂

"The Zoomies", or what I call Romp Mode is what dogs do, when humans would be laughing out loud. Dogs have a sense of humor, just like we do. When they find something so funny that a person would be laughing, The Zoomies is the canine version.
