There are actual multiple gameplay functions to cigarettes. It's a light, it's a laser detector, it makes you aim better, it makes Snake heal stress, and enemies can smell the cigarette and walk over to investigate the smell which is a nice way to lure in individual guards. It also prevents Hornets and Bees from attacking you because of all the smoke. So while yes the game story tries very hard to convey smoking is bad that's only because of how beneficial smoking is for the experienced player. It's not a coincidence speedrunners even use the Cigars in MGS3. They're a very handy tool for the creative mind. It has a unique risk reward and ensures you always have some kind of support item if you didn't explore the maps well enough for more items like Diazepam. I really want to emphasize that the enemy SMELLS YOU. Cigarettes are your main source of luring guards without using any noise. Very ingenious and subtle design. He only smokes when he's stressed. That's the core idea behind the cigarettes in the story. That's why at the very end he stops. He's no longer stressed. He accepted his fate and is happy with the work he has done.

My dad once said, "if you don't start, you don't have to quit." Now I say it and I live it.

Getting lectured by a woman about lung cancer is kinda funny knowing she tries to kill ya lol

Your analysis of how an adult human could or couldn't swallow a pack of cigarettes is spot on, but unfortunately there's a much simpler explanation. Snake is CIA trained to do this - and since he knew his stomach acids would be suppressed, its far easier and safer to just put the cigaretts into a small plastic bag and swallow them as a somewhat elastic cylinder than a hard cardboard rectangle. This is legitimately training that operatives get and Snake would most certainly know it.

Love all these new words I'm learning in this essay, like "Contribuating" and "Dramastically."

Me as an ex cigarette smoker, vaping like a chimney, “oh, Snake, how stupid.” heaves my vape and coughs So much healthier… 😂
-
Things I've learned in this video 1. Kojima is cool 2. Snake is the throat goat.
-
"Dramastically" is my new favorite word
-
smoking a blunt to this

Big Boss was a soldier in the 60s so I'm sure he had plenty of time to try plenty of wild substances. It's a shame our friend Hideo Kojima didn't have time to show Big Boss taking drugs and slaying a bear.

Ex smoker and damn this shit is accurate and i gan FEEL those lighter anxiety moments

My Mom's dying of COPD. I thought this was going to be a meme thing so I avoided clicking until I was too beguiled by MGS stuff. I'm pleasantly astonished by what you put together here. Thank you.

Well you see the meaning is quite simple One guy smokes cigars and he’s the big bad The other guy (who’s an identical clone of the first guy) smokes cigarettes, so he’s the good guy Bravo kojima
-
You probably won't see this, but Venom is actually not vaping nicotine, he's vaping some special chemical from Terragon, which is eerily similar to THC
-
I always used to say : Even smoking in these games has a meaning that even i cant fockin get

I used to smoke like a pack a day from when i was 15 to around 24-25. Then i quit smoking and switched to those first popular sub-ohm tank vapes that slowly developed to give off bigger and bigger clouds. Now recently I switched to a very tiny vape that gives off as little vapor as possible and uses flavorless 20mg/ml nic juice that's taxed and approved by the government over here. And half the time im out of nic juice anyway, so i'm slowly moving on to those nicotine pouches like Zyn. I have a long term goal of going fully off nicotine, but im slowly tapering it down. This has been a weird method but it worked for me. It's all about misdirecting your brain not to focus on it too much and letting it happen on its own. I quit doing drugs that way too, replacing certain addictions with something less harmful, then slowly lowering the amounts while switching to something even more harmless until its just not worth it to do it anymore. I'm still smoking CBD crumble every now and then, and maybe taking an extra vyvanse or some shrooms once every blue moon if i go out partying with friends. But that's a far cry from being a daily smoker of both weed and tobacco, or constantly doing street amphetamine, X, and various script pills while drinking booze. That's really not the method for everyone tho. But everyone has some method that minimizes the pain while gaining the benefits of quitting. It's a long term investment thats 100% worth it
