You have to pull slightly downwards and away. There's a tutorial that explains this in depth. You can see that the cloth lifts up slightly

We did this in high school physics. You have to angle your pull downward, towards the floor.

As someone who uses to spend hours a day just pulling tablecloths off of tables, you don't just pull straight away from the table, you lift up a little bit, and then snap the tablecloth down this makes all the stuff on the cloth jump a little so that it doesn't get pulled with the cloth.
