The Chaos Gods love the Emperor. Khorne loves him for his unending wars Nurgle loves him for his unyielding will to endure and how his Imperium rots. Slaanesh loves him for the exquisite pain Big-E is always in. Tzeentch loves him for his convoluted unending scheming.

I still think the Emperor being too attached to Horus to be able to kill him, suffering fatal wounds in the process, only for Horus to open Emps' eyes by obliterating Ollanius Pius, resulting in the Emperor obliterating Horus, makes for a more thematic ending. That in-spite of the Emperor's superiority to man, and his love for his sons, he was still able to recognise his true purpose- to destroy Chaos, his true love- a love of mankind.
