[MV] Azalea by Rolling Quartz (Eng/Esp Sub) 진달래꽃 by 롤링쿼츠 #KRock #GirlBand

Published 2022-03-21
* The Music Video
Azaleas are a popular flower, blooming in the mountains and fields of Korea when spring comes. Like this flower, we want to always be by your side. It is a flower that has never been used as a symbol of any royal family or nobility in Korea. However, in order to express the precious and beautiful meaning of this flower, we filmed the music video at the royal palace of Baekje (백제), one of the ancient kingdoms of Korea—a kingdom which has an amazing and sad history.

* 뮤직비디오

** Kim So-wol (The Poet)
Despite his short life, he is possibly the poet most loved by Koreans.
A poet who left behind famous works, but who lived a lonely life.
His name So-wol means "white moon".

*** Maya (The Song’s Original Singer)
She is a female rocker who sought to popularize rock in Korea.
She is still a popular singer in Korea.

**** Azalea (The Song)
In Kim So-wol's original Azalea (as is always the case with So-wol's work),
it is impossible to tell whether it is from a man's point of view or a woman's point of view. Also, we do not know whether the content of this poem is about the beginning of love or the end of love. However, the lyrics in this song were shaped by the lyricists Ji-min Woo and Lucia, interpreted as being both weak and strong, while being both sad and beautiful.
Additionally, the melody line composed by Ji-min Woo is considered to be a masterpiece that made this song seem both familiar and new by blending familiarity and freshness.

    This amazing song is based on a poem by one of Korea's major poets, Kim Sowol. It was written more than 100 years ago. As anything written during the Japanese Occupation of Korea, it was a love song, but most importantly, it was a political song, disguised to ward off the Japanese Imperial Army Intelligence. The meaning of the poem is dual. It refers to the lover who walks away, with heartbreaking tenderness. The lover that Kim Sowol lost, because of impossible circumstances, which led her to despise him, and him never getting over it. But it can also refer to the Occupier, the Invader. The poet also says that he won't shed a tear and throw Azaleas from the mountain, when the Invader will depart, as they march away. And when Korea will be free again, after all those brutal years of the Occupation, he won't shed a tear. Maya took this poem 88 years later, and made it into a very important Rock song. She used the poem as the chorus and added a dialogue with the poet across space and time. The song also has a dual meaning, as the poem. It speaks to the lover, but also to those Despots and Generals, and their autocratic Party, who were ruling Korea with an iron fist, for endless decades. South Korea became a Democracy as late as 1997. This song was released in 2007 and it features scenes from student uprisings and bloody Army intervention against the protesters. It celebrates the birth of a Democracy after a bloody century. Obviously, RQ go for the simple beauty of this song and it's worth as a tender and touching love song. But it still is one of the most important, politically and emotionally charged, pieces of art on the Korean language and history, used by different generations, during their struggle for Freedom.

    Both Maya & Kim So-wol would've had nothing other than positive responses to this outstanding reinterpretation of their respective works. 👍

    Just want to welcome Azalea into the immortality that is my Top 5 metal ballads of all-time.

    My daughter and I love watching your performances! She really loves Iree and wants to be like her.

    Well ladies, you got a HUGE compliment today. I was watching reaction videos to this and my mom (she's 86 and lives with me now) asked what I was doing. I told her I know it's not her kind of music, but to please try it and see what she thinks - she only listens to classical music. I put this on for her and not only did she watch the whole thing, I explained what it was about to her and that really impressed her, but she also complimented all of you on the quality of your individual skill at your instruments "they're very good", and she was really impressed by the vocals, especially at 2:29. She said "I see why you like them so much." Coming from my mom, this was shocking, but it's also testament to just how great this is and what a great job you're doing.

    Discovered this song when Rolling Quartz performed at Toronto Korean Festival last summer and still have it on repeat. 🌸👑💎
  • @jlim1
    This song is so good. This is a legit rock band. All the members #1 through #5 are really talented musicians. My bias is the drummer and her rock/metal style. Some of her drum fills sound like she is playing double bass drums. Sounds so clean

    I will never get over Jayoung's voice. It is incredible

  • @philragu5298
    Couldn't help but notice the influence of the 70's and 90's American rock on the guitar riffs, Queensryche's Empire in the opening riff and Lynyrd Skynrd's Simple Man a little later on the guitar and bass. Being a music producer of dance and hi hop I applaud the stones to mix those two bands styles! They had me as a fan right then! I'll be expecting great things from these ladies, Bravo!!!
  • @bishopman2308
    This is just beautiful, no matter what language it's in. Rolling Quartz's music should be played on all rock stations around the world. When I listen to RQ, I just feel like they should be one of the biggest bands in the world.
