Sounds like my mother, she’s 97 now. I had to face the fact several years ago she was always in competition with me. Don’t get me wrong, I love her, but her love always came with conditions. The belittling was chronic, could never please her. She came from a very traumatic childhood, I know that now. Always felt drained after spending time with her. I am almost 70 years old, and it took me a lifetime to create boundaries with a person who could have loved me unconditionally.
