Painting a portrait from a live model is not easy some of you. Still, I would like to advise everyone to keep practicing portrait drawing as much as possible, in the long run it pays off

It is my intention to publish everything I know about portrait painting.

  • I had to stop today and realize I need to copy your technique more and more to get away from trying to make my portraits look too perfect. It works as you describe how it is done. At 85 I am still learning......thanks for this new video!
  • So much to learn here, another fantastic video I'll be watching over & over. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom Ben; it's so very much appreciated xx

I have been drawing portraits in graphite and charcoal for many years. I have all the tools, including oils, I need to attempt a painting but they have stayed on the shelf. Your instructions and inspiration have made me overcome my fears of "really messing up." I have now begun the portrait painting journey. Thank you sincerely!
  • so happy to find you back with a new tutorial....always enlightening and inspiring.

Ben, I am so glad to watch your videos! Last weekend I painted from live model, she tried to sit still for about 1,5-2 hours, looking TV series) before I learned from your video how to put underpainting in raw umber like you do. It was my second portrait painting in oil, and it was also second painting from live model. The first one was done also after the video if your blonde granddaughter. Now I realized that I have no fear of oil and of painting with people sitting in front of me anymore 😅 I have been painting in oil only from October 2022 and at first I was afraid of this medium. At first I started from landscapes and still life. But I always wanted to make portraits, since I tried draw them in pencils and watercolor and acrylic. How luckily I met you on Youtube! I watch you videos one by one like a dessert 😊 and of course not only one time! I send you so much gratitude and respect! You are the awesome painter, I like your “not-too-elaborated” style. Hope to see more videos from you!)

Dear Mr. Lustenhauwer. Watching you paint and listening to you explaining every detail is how I build - slowly - my own techniques, hoping to get better and better over time. But there is another, perhaps even greater gift you give to us - your audience - and that is CONFIDENCE in our abilities to see, experience and understand the world around us and encourage us to paint. Thank you - again!
