A Kelowna, B.C., family says an Airbnb stay in Langley, B.C., was not even close to as advertised, and they're warning others to do their due diligence before booking on the site.

Jeannine Little says there were trenches in front of the house, peeling paint everywhere, and that the house was basically empty.

Global News tried reaching out to the Airbnb host who wouldn't take our calls, and the listing has since been removed.

Janet Brown has the story.

  • This is why I stay in clean, safe hotels. Why stay in strangers homes?
  • She went ahead to book when the reviews said it was awful? How’s that different than booking a hotel on Expedia that has a 3/10 rating and then complaining about it?
  • Hotels are legit business who are inspected, controlled, pay taxes and employ people. Better for you, better for the economy, better for everyone. Risk free!

All you can do is rent a good hotel, I won’t ever rent an airbnb ever again. Horrible experience and they don’t help when needed. Terrible hosts

Airbnb charges hundreds in service fees for even a week at a modest cottage. They're supposed to be checking up on places to make sure they are as advertised.

One of two reviews said AWFUL “Hmmmm honey, let’s book this one” ( Not a lot of brain cells there )

I have booked maybe 40 airbnbs over the years and have always been happy. I read reviews carefully and do not book new listings.
  • I have used AirBnb twice and I will never ever use them again because the advertising and photos of those rentals are very misleading till you get there . I prefer hotels at any given time be it expensive or not. No muss no fuss. My 2 bits.

It's awesome some places are banning short term rentals!

2 reviews only and was said awful? Yet you booked it thinking somehow it would be fine? Sorry but due diligence is 100% required when booking private peoples homes. They are not a hotel chain.

I learned my lesson 10 years ago and never used Airbnb since.

That’s why you read the reviews before you rent the airbnb. She saw the reviews but still rent the airbnb listing anyway.
  • She ignored the bad review. Sounds like she didn't do her due diligence.

I truly appreciate all of the people who gave me a chance when I first stared with No reviews!
