Alan Watts was one of the most important thinkers of all time.

He tried to introduce eastern philosophies to the western world and help the constantly occupied western mind to slow down.

This speech discusses ego death and how it constitutes a fundamental element in our attempt to re-institute connection with the world around us.

  • We need to abandon the completely illusory nature of the beings that we think we are and get back again to the beings that we really are, which includes all this outside world, no longer left outside.

Ego death doesn't necessarily mean that the ego completely disappears or ceases to exist; rather, it means letting go of attachment to the ego and developing an expanded awareness of interconnectedness and the true nature of reality

When the ego dies, we notice it never was, we just didn't know, but when we do know, we notice we always knew, without knowing we knew

Only when I lost myself could I find who I really was.

Gen-z really needs to hear Alan's words today. Ego is the fear of death

It is important to distinguish between the ego and the psychological I. The disappearance of the psychological I is dangerous, it is called psychosis. As long as we are in the human body, we need the psychological I to cope with everyday life. The ego, on the other hand, is an artificial, infantile entity, filled with fear, the desire for importance, for being right. It is this ego, which must die. Some spiritual teachers forget to explain this important difference, which may cause psychic desease.
  • I have always felt conflicted with Alan Watts, for it is difficult for one to truly live such a philosophy of life to its very end. Although I may feel a deep connection with the world in the times I most abandon myself, I also recognize the importance of the self-regulation that the ego performs within me. Perhaps it is the fear of completely letting go that holds me back? All in all, this video has given me so much, and I thank you once more for this great gift my friend.

My ego says I should give up my ego in order to feel less anxious and to be better at everything. But that would be a dead end.

Having severe depression for 10 years felt like being revived from Ego Death.
  • God I get so tired of existing and I know I should be thankful. It never ends. I love me and all of you. It’s good to be here.

When i was on shrooms once i had an ego death i basically told myself damn dont shit matter in this world, because of that i stopped gaf what people thought of me because “im not real” im just awareness, i looked at myself as a spectator of the world. I detached from everything & because it i had so much freedom but also power because i went after what i wanted

I've been searching for something like this that only confirms my beliefs for most of my life. I got brainwashed by the system and the outside world in general when I was growing up but deep down inside, I felt empty, it had no real sense of purpose or meaning. Everything I learned didn't fit and so I began the search for my true self, something that resonated with my soul. Through finding that, I found true happiness, fulfillment and connection to the world.
  • I experienced what I believe to be ‘Ego Death’ last night. The second time I have experienced this feeling of detaching my conscious from my physical being. I have suffered for the past 10+ years with feeling lost, depressed, not knowing what my life is or what is, is. Today I feel cured, I feel I can make a choice to be better, to love, to do good. I feel, for the first time in so long, cured and free from the dark feelings I once had.
