We speak with Politico reporter Ian Ward about JD Vance, who has become a lightning rod for controversy since being picked by former President Donald Trump to be his running mate. Ward spent months with Vance earlier this year for a profile about the freshman Ohio senator and his political evolution from a “Never Trump” Republican to one of the MAGA movement’s most prominent voices. He recently wrote a new piece about Vance headlined “The Seven Thinkers and Groups That Have Shaped JD Vance’s Unusual Worldview.”

Children are not a function of sex. Children are a function of society. They come into the world when the parents feel safe. JD Vance wants US population growth; start by paying a living wage. Provide an actual path to home ownership. Defend the population against corporate thuggery. Protect us, stop serving us up to your donors.

Ignore this at your peril. There is a reason Vance was chosen. A post democratic America is the goal. Trump is not the driver. Trump is the tool.

Civilized means to be nice and fake. Vance is honest from his point of view and he should be called barbarian instead of weird.

So, it's o.k. for Vance's wife to be an attorney (and have only one child, which doesn't replace them), but the rest of us should be barefoot and pregnant?

How can these people be called "pro-family" when every single thing they stand for undermines families. A decent minimum wage supports families. Paid family leave supports families. Quality public education supports families. Affordable health care supports families. Etc. What they mean by "pro-family" is heterosexual marriages where the man is in charge, the woman is at home having babies (rather than cats, apparently) and is doing as she is told and can neither leave nor control how many children she has. It is not pro-family. It is pro-patriarchy at its worst.

We're really stretching what qualifies as "intellectual" here, lol.
  • The New Republic, online/free, has an article by Gil Duran entitled "Where J.D. Vance gets his weird, terrifying techno ideas". In this article the author reports on discussions between Vance, Theil, and a techbro named Curtis Yarvin that include discussions of a massive surveillance state operating to control individual citizens and monitor their private lives Duran also reveals their plans for corporate serfdom where CEO's are the only local government, free to enact whatever brutal means of control necessary: this includes chopping off limbs, incarceration in solitary with "tech" psychological torture. They also examine genocide in these conversations. PLEASE READ THIS. VANCE IS NOT TRUMP'S PICK; He is chosen by the Heritage Foundation as Trump's successor. He is every bit as creepy has he seems but VERY MUCH MORE and this is the intended future of Project 2025. The Supreme Court has given immunity for everything: including the list of horrors enacted by the Naziis, but in a far darker and ultimately broader spectrum of evil, barbarity, and debauchery.

Yarvin has some stunningly harebrained ideas about history, society and the solutions to these “problems”. He’s also extremely unimpressive to listen to. Vance should be embarrassed that he’s listed as an influence

I love Democracy Now 🇨🇦❤️✌🏻🇵🇸 It should be 24/7 It takes me back to the Walter Chronkite days
  • Do we see parallels between Elon Musk's and JD Vance's views on declining birth rates and conservatism. Their shared goals for social change through political affiliation are noteworthy, especially given Elon's substantial support for the Republican campaign.

These fools are called boring old school reactionaries. They offer nothing new or interesting. Only lots of sophistry and nostalgia for a country that never existed.

Problem "American democracy has denigrated into a corrupt oligarchy" Solution "Get rid of democracy, consolidate the oligarchy but change the rules so it isn't corrupt any more".

Mitterrand had a great natality policy. In his first term, PCF was part of the government (and France was flooded with CIA assets as a result). That policy prevented tens of thousands of abortions, while preserving choice and paying most of the cost of elective abortion (but ALL the cost of childbearing, for all women). But no one ever talks about that. Hmm.

A movement needs reporters like this who can map out the roots of ideologies running through American society. Ultimately, ideologies do not politicize but, rather, mystify conditions imposed on working people in a capitalist society.
  • @chubsteriffic
So Vance has “unusual” beliefs? What might those be?
  • @guybrush3000
This was a fascinating interview. I really appreciate that Ward doesn't put his own spin on these people, but just conveys the information. I suppose the word "unusual" could have a negative connotation, but is none the less accurate.
  • @GaliCarmel
One of the best interviews in Democracy Now, where ideas are presented and allow thought. I recommend more of this

Glenn Greenwald Who is JD Vance and what does he really believe
  • @lugortube
It’s an interesting stance to wrap your enemies in scary ideologies and yet be unaware of the origins of your own unoriginal thinking.
