In a groundbreaking move, the UK has returned migrants rescued in the Channel back to France, highlighting increased Anglo-French cooperation on the small boats crisis.

On Wednesday, after a call for help from France, a Border Force Ranger catamaran and an RNLI lifeboat were dispatched from Dover. The French ship PSP Cormoran picked up 59 people, while the British vessel rescued another 13.

Tragically, one migrant died after their small boat deflated near Calais, but the remaining 71 were safely returned to France.

This makes it the first time a British vessel has rescued migrants in French waters and taken them back to France.

Ian Collins speaks with political commentator Theo Usherwood.

  • If they were in British waters there's absolutely zero chance they would have been returned to France. Nice spin though
  • They weren't in British water, and their boat was sinking . That's why they returned to France, not because of our government
  • Voters have been saying this is the answer to illegal immigrants for years but politicians are deaf to the wishes of the people.
  • Only went back to France as they were in French waters. Utter rubbish by Labour.
  • @mentonish
They never returned as they never left france
  • Kier isn’t ‘trying to do’ anything, he’s trying to look like he’s doing something
  • REform UK would have been far better in office than labour, at least the country would have stood a chance then
  • @Paul-wc7lv
Hang on before the back slapping, he's giving 90,000 freedom to stay here
  • Border force rescued the immigrants from the channel and returned them to the French boat, and they were returned to France
  • @mindfulmw
and yet again they are all young men!!
  • @BeerStens
Its not a rescue its a free ferry sevice.
  • Because a dinghy was in trouble in French waters, not because Starmer had surprised everyone by laying down the law instead of the usual ceremonial red carpet.
  • So are the thousands of others going back? What a dumb story.
  • God help anyone who vote Labour this vote was for the children and grandchildren of this country god help you 😪😪🤬🤬

We are often told that the UK cannot return immigrants to France because we left the EU - this is true but it is conveniently overlooking another law - International Maritime law which states that a vessel MUST go to the aid of those in distress on the sea and MUST return them to the nearest safe harbour. This is the issue I have with the RNLI and Border Force vessels, not that rescuing immigrants in trouble at sea, they have to do that by law, but that they rarely take them to the nearest safe harbour. If the immigrants are in UK waters then the EU law kicks in and International Maritime Law is consistent. But if they are in French or International waters then they can be returned to France, because it is not conflicting the EU law and may be legally obliged to do so if France is closer. The RNLI, in particular, have been contravening the International Maritime Law, in one case they rescued migrants just a mile off the French coast and then instead of taking them the 1 mile to Calais they brought them 20 miles to Dover.
  • The real question is why does THE BRITISH BORDER FORCE hang out off the FRENCH COAST ??? we all know those idiots in the RNLI are there touting for heroic rescues 😂😂😂😂 , but I thought BORDER FORCE was paid for by the tax payer and expected to work OFF BRITISH SHORES not grabbing a baguette every morning
