Growing up in the 60s, I wore out several needles on my record player trying to learn how to achieve Luther‘s sound on a guitar.

When you consider the fact that he trailblazed a new guitar sound that helped make one of the most famous entertainers in American history famous….and then you consider that he played on so many million selling records that are still very relevant even 65 years later….I think he should be in the country music hall of fame. I have thought this for several years now.

I think it’s safe to say his guitar style is one of the most iconic sounds in country music. In fact, it might be the most iconic sound.

I knew Johnny Cash had two supporting musicians but I never knew who they were. After seeing this video on Luther Perkins I now know more about one of them and came to find out what a remarkable individual he was. I hope you're resting in peace, Mr. Perkins.
  • What would country music have been without Luther? Well done film! He is my favorite guitar player, and the inspiration for most of the music I make.

What a great American soul! Thank you Luther! Thanks for posting this!
  • You know, with Luther's guitar style they really didn't need a drummer. He played a terrific and driving rhythm guitar as well.
  • Luther Perkins is my hero,I play guitar just because of his playing and style to me is the greatest guitar player that's ever lived,I'm sixty five and I was around six or seven years old when I heard Johnny Cash and his great guitar player,Any one who knows me will tell you Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two and the Tennessee three was when I went Johnny Cash crazy.

I'm 21 years old Luther has been my number one Guitar hero since I was young very young and I first heard Johnny Cash Luther is still my number one guitar influence I even use flatwounds I use my own custom set the 7/38 with an 18 wound third this is the gauge set I've been using for years on my homemade electric guitar that was built by me and my grandfather from scratch

Back in 1969 I got to ride with Johnny Cash and Luther from Virginia, MN to Eveleth, MN. My dad was the cab driver.

One of America's greats. Love his version of Tennessee Flattop Box. Masterpiece
  • the Luther years were the best years for Johnny ,after Luthers death it wasn;t the same. Bob Wooten is O.K. but he was now Luther.
