City of the Damned! Tuomas Pirinen and John Blanche on Mordheim

Published 2024-03-08
This is a bit of a special video for me, in that its the first piece of footage I filmed, all the way back in July 2023!

At the start of the year John had mentioned that Tuomas Pirinen would be visiting him, and I toyed with the idea of doing some filming whilst they were both in the same room. John introduced me to Tuomas, and the pair of them thought doing some filming was a great idea! So when Tuomas came over to the UK it was great to finally meet him in the flesh, and to be able to hang out with him and John was such an awesome experience.

So we just loosely chatted about Mordheim. No real set agenda, but it was fascinating hearing the pair of them go over the old days. On the day my main camera died which was a bit of a disaster, and it was only recently I was able to recover the footage which you're now viewing.

So here you are! Really glad I'm able to finally get this footage on the web as its the thing that kicked off my other videos.

These videos were made in my spare time, and if you wish to pop a donation my way to help support me it'd be greatly appreciated:

  • Great to hear you guys sharing such wonderful and inspiring memories of working on the Mordheim project - the stand out project of the time - everything came together: game ideas, artistic vision and fantastic models - and I couldn't think of two people better suited to carry that banner forward. You may be surprised to know I still have the Morheim gang that I converted back in the day - all converted from the Empire range of the day - it has not seen the tabletop for many years but I wouldn't part with it - nice reminder of great times. Thanks very much for putting this together.
  • I’ve spent 25 years wondering what all the fish were about and John is all “I can make up symbolism and not tell anyone what it means.”

My favourite game GW gave ever put out on every level. I loved the models, the lore, the art, and the pervasive sense of despair that ran through the whole game. Just a magical release. So great to hear from Pirenen and Blanche on this.

Heeey, I actually met Tuomas at the event he mentioned! He seemed to spend a lot of time wondering around the huge convention, but visited the Oldhammer tournament (WHFB 4th or 5th edition I think) quite a few times. Wouldn't have otherwise been easy to spot because he's kinda on the shorter side and a lot of the players were burly dudes 185cm in all directions. However, it was immediately obvious when he was around because everyone treated him like a rockstar, asking for autographs and telling how the stuff he wrote defined their childhoods. Also, his leather jacket was pretty cool.

Fantastic timing, I have been voraciously consuming Mordheim content on YT this week, and your interviews are always awesome!

The whole thing is a joy, but I loved hearing Toumas making John belly laugh talking about Nigel Stillman

Thank you so much for the content that you produce. I used to carry the mordheim rulebook to school with me every day back when i was a kid, id read it constantly and that game more than anything defines what warhammer is for me, and what excellence in game design is.

May this series of interviews never end. It adds a level of history to the games I grew up with (and continue to cherish to this day) that I hope to pass onto my children when they're old enough.

Having them interviewed in the together, and the way they interact is so fitting for the kind of collaboration they're talking about! I was around 16 and had just started to consistently get White Dwarf when Mordheim took off. At least I felt the enthusiasm for it, from what these guys set in motion, to iconic little illustrations, the architecture, and all the ways to kitbash it with popsicle sticks, haha. It's wonderful to hear their stories and thoughts on such great times, thank you!
