Have you ever wondered why there are no GOOD official Doctor Who video games? If so, have you also ever wondered if there was maybe at least ONE good Doctor Who game that was somehow lost? Maybe even lost INSIDE another game? Well for all 15 of you who have ever thought that, you're in luck because in this video, I bring to light the BEST Doctor Who video game you can play... Except it's stuck inside another game.

YES I know I’m talking about yet another LEGO game, but I find the concept of LEGO Dimensions to be quite fascinating. On top of that, the fact that many people love the Doctor Who portion of the game is super interesting, so I’m diving in and doing a retrospective/analysis/video essay on the topic!

CHAPTERS:
00:00 - Intro
00:40 - My History with Doctor Who
02:23 - Doctor Who Games (kinda suck)

Two points of clarification: 1. I am not British and am in fact an American, it has been brought to my attention that the joke was a little too subtle. 2. The Doctor Who TV show itself ended in 1989. But in 1996, they attempted to revive the IP with a Hollywood film, but it didn’t succeed so it stayed “dead” until 2005. I said the show ended in 1996, as I was referring to the last bit of ‘Classic Who’ content with the McGann film. I felt it wasn’t necessary to explain that in the video, but again it was brought to my attention that it may have been misleading so here we are. But thank you all for over 200k views, this is incredible and I’m so glad everyone is enjoying it! Edit: 200k now not 100k what the heck

The problem with Doctor Who games is always the Doctor himself. If you play as the companion, you're not the star of the story, which feels bad. If you play as the Doctor, you're playing a character who's main ability is being smarter and more knowledgeable than everyone around them, which is a lot harder to make a game out of than some guy who shoots lasers out of his hands or can teleport.

If you liked this, I think you'd also enjoy a mod based around Doctor Who. For Fallout New Vegas is Fallout Who Vegas, a fun mod with a story about your character inheriting the Doctor's TARDIS through a bootstrap paradox after they died for good on Trenzalore, following an alternate timeline to the show. The TARDIS is partly a player home and partly a replacement for fast travel. It has new skills, one of which is a TARDIS piloting skill to unlock new features of the TARDIS, lots of new locations, you can pick basically any of the Doctor's TARDIS interiors with an exterior to match, you can use the crafting system with high science and medicine skills to become a Time Lord, and you can get different looks for the sonic screwdriver and each Doctor's outfit by finding hypercubes of their memories scattered around the mod areas. It's a very good mod, highly recommend, especially with Xoanon's patches and additions for it.

We were just big fans of the show! :) Fun fact, the artists went wild and built EVERY console room variation...more than we had Doctors for. For the most part I could link the console room to the incarnation of the Doctor you are currently using, but that left one spare. So if you play as Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor, if the day of the month is a multiple of 4, you get the wooden Secondary Console Room instead. Also...if you wanna milk the game for everything it has, there is a purple stud hidden in the back right corridor out of Capaldi's console room - it's a dead end but you can jump to collect it. That purple stud respawns every time you re-enter the TARDIS ;) Have fun...

My favourite dialogue from this game is the reactions you get from The Doctor and Doc Brown, when they enter each other’s time vehicles: Doc Brown in the TARDIS: “You really should have listened to me when I said ‘If you're gonna build a time machine, do it with some style!’” The Doctor (12) in the DeLorean: “I could save the Universe three times over before this 'baby' hits 88 miles per hour! Quickly! Back to the TARDIS!”
  • Well this is a surprise! - I worked on this game and some expansions, from 2015 to 2017, didn't expect to see any love for it in 2024! but you're right, some IPs really did get a lot of love (some not so much) but Dr Who had a ton of extra work ploughed into it for all of the Doctor and Tardis variants, and the levels were among the best. glad you enjoyed :)

I do like the fact that after the Doctor Who level in the main game, they kept using Daleks as a type of main commander enemy type that just showed up wherever the devs wanted a stronger base enemy. Also Sauron summoning a dalek ship out of his eye while fighting batman in metropolis is definantly a moment of all time.

The problem is that I don't think we will ever get a proper Doctor Who videogame ever again. the Doctor Who Adventure games is the closest thing we will ever have to a good game that works with the tone and style of Doctor Who. The problem is that it is really damn hard to even find. But I really do think an actual stand-alone LEGO Doctor Who game would be fantastic, especially with how they are doing lego games now, it would be even better than before.

P.S.... ALL of the Doctor Who content in Lego Dimensions is pretty great. Likely, there wasn't enough time for you to do a playthrough as in depth as possible with that game. Lots of levels have a TARDIS port and most of them relate in some way to the level they appear in. In the Simpsons level of the main game, you can find a port that takes you back in time to another cartoon, The Flintstones. In fact, it's been so long since I played the game... The only other notable example I can think of, is the port found in one of the "Fantastic Beasts..." levels which leads to the 2010s version of the Britcom "Red Dwarf." Lego Dimensions' gameplay was probably over-simplistic, but the digital artistry on display was excellent. Also, Dimensions is the only "Toys to Life" title where playing with the toys was integrated into the game. You move pieces around the game pad to solve puzzles and escape traps and whenever you upgrade vehicles to a different form, a book of building instructions appears and you can actively build the new one. It's really sad the TTL fad burned out so furiously. This game was truly special.

i love how capaldi's little lego self also runs like a penguin with his arse on fire

The other great thing about the Tardis is the game was it worked in other levels and added Easter Eggs to The Simpsons level as you could find a Tardis pad and go backwards in time and it would be a Flintstones homage. Go forward in time and you would be in a Jettsons area. There is also a Red Dwarf area you can visit using the Tardis but can’t remember where that one is. They should release it without the figures and just have access to every character and slightly rework the pad mechanics and it would probably sell quite well but they probably have lost access to some of the licenses.

"There IS a good Who game - you just need a hundred individual pieces of plastic to play it" "Well that's alright then!"
  • @kiddkd7242
Out of all the official “full-length” DW games, I gotta say the adventure games are my favorite. They aren’t perfect, but I feel like they are the closet game adaptation of the show we have gotten so far. I like the episodic nature of the game, as it allows for more variety in locations. My favorite episode is the Elizabethan England one.
  • @aitipsea3909
To get minikits in other levels you also need to time travel with the Tardis which leads you to other Doctor Who scenarios like the Silurian Arc or the Versailles Palace where you fight enemies and solve puzzles revolving the episodes those secnarios come from
  • @MotivatedBean98
But there's more doctor who content hidden in the game. There's a main quest all about Doctor who and four or five special hidden levels inside other levels, like dinosaurs in a spaceship inside the lord of the rings quest or the black archive in other level and the spaceship from the girl in the fireplace inside the doctor who main story quest. I could stay here talking for hours about this hidden doctor who levels...
  • @InTheVoid
There’s no sorry or anything but I love messing about with the TARDIS addons to Garry’s mod
  • @GaiashKetoji
With the main campaign you don’t have to use the main trio after you scan them for the first time if you have other characters with the same abilities. The only difference is that their reactions to the story don’t pop up without them being there.
  • @vullord666
With all the big budget licensed games coming out, I'd really love a massive open universe Doctor Who game that took 10 years to develop. Then give it mod support to immortalize it.
  • @NotSeregnar
Great video! I remember watching some gameplay a while after Lego Dimensions and being surprised by how well the two properties worked together. A full on Lego Doctor Who game would be so amazing and full of potential. Also, Fifteen's theme is so good!
