Thanks to Daniel Myslivets for helping me to gather information for this video.

Hello, my friends! Let's hit 100K likes? Check out my website! enderman.ch/
Today I am going to show you how I activated Windows XP by phone. It was a disaster. Almost 20 years since the release, more than 7 since its end of life, OEM versions of Windows XP can potentially be truly activated using a phone and a toll-free number for any country. Welcome to my first ever voiced over video on this channel.

Fun fact - There is a lot of software that still relies on XP and even older operating systems. This is why the activation is still important. If Microsoft shut it down, many services, such as gas and electric companies, process controls and others essential services would no longer have the ability to operate. Some of this software is so sophisticated and complex that recreating it with current versions of Windows would be too expensive.

It actually doesn’t surprise me at all that Microsoft implemented something this dreadful. Their philosophy was always “as long as it kinda works”.

"This call may be recorded or monitored" Enderman: Oh how the turns have tabled!

They have to keep this alive for legal reasons, or otherwise people would complain that they cannot use software that they purchased. (Later software gets around this by including a clause in the Terms of Service that it's "licensed, not sold". Adobe learned this the hard way when they were forced to deactivate the activation servers for their CS2 products from 2005 for technical reasons, and as the software's ToS didn't have that clause, they had to release the whole suite DRM-free for anyone to download online.)

Imagine that old server being off for years, then suddenly an employee at Microsoft sees the old machine fire up again after almost a decade of no service
  • All the wonders of technological progress since 2001 and activating a Windows product is just as difficult and frustrating as it was when new!
  • That dog and poney show certainly brought back unpleasant memories. Don't feel bad, I live in America and speak excellent English and still had trouble with the bot understanding me and that was a long time ago. I think one time I even tried saying the numbers phonetically like they do in the military but no good. You really have to have the patience of Jobe to do this sort of thing. By the way, I've got two copies of XP which I've been thinking of installing on a newer computer, plus a Dell Latitude with XP already on it, man, I love that OS.

For future reference, when trying to navigate computer voice menu systems, speakerphone is much harder for the computer to process than the phone's internal mic. Also, when you're using touchtones, push the number buttons longer, and mute the microphone. It helps keep the signal clean for the computer to process the beeps.
