The activation procedure is more complicated than launching a missile.

They have to keep this alive for legal reasons, or otherwise people would complain that they cannot use software that they purchased. (Later software gets around this by including a clause in the Terms of Service that it's "licensed, not sold". Adobe learned this the hard way when they were forced to deactivate the activation servers for their CS2 products from 2005 for technical reasons, and as the software's ToS didn't have that clause, they had to release the whole suite DRM-free for anyone to download online.)

im impressed that this way of activating windows xp still works, its been 8 years since windows xp support ended, yet it didnt mean that you cant activate windows xp using telephone 8 years after the support ended

Windows XP will NEVER die! I use it and enjoy it in a virtual machine every day. It is the most iconic OS Microsoft has ever released. XP was so popular back in the day (and rightfully so), that Microsoft had to support it for literally 12.5 years (or 17.5 years for ESU), which is a significantly longer lifespan than any other OS ever released. XP was the sole version of Windows to include ONLY improvements compared to its predecessors, in every single aspect -- stability, security, performance, appearance, interface, features, customizabilty, and more. Unlike any other version of Windows, XP did not remove any useful features and gave you complete and total freedom to customize the look and feel of your PC without having to rely on some hacks or third-party tools. Not to mention its unique and iconic sounds, as well as its default desktop background, which is by far the most calming and beautiful among all Windows versions. It actually became the most recognizable picture in the world, thanks to XP's huge popularity and people's understandable refusal to upgrade for so many years. For these reasons (and many more), XP will always have a special place in the hearts of so many people. Even today, 22.5 years after release and a full DECADE after support ended, XP is still used on approximately 9 million PCs around the world. It is insane, but not really surprising given how perfect this OS is!

For future reference, when trying to navigate computer voice menu systems, speakerphone is much harder for the computer to process than the phone's internal mic. Also, when you're using touchtones, push the number buttons longer, and mute the microphone. It helps keep the signal clean for the computer to process the beeps. Its so odd to me that they presented french as the second language option. Maybe its regional, but where I am in the US spanish is a common second language and I see spanish everywhere. French is a common second language in some parts of the US, but I see it as a second language more often in Canada
