No way I'd watch 4 hours of any other history documentary. Everyone has already applauded Mary for her fantastic presentation, but I think the producers and their crew also deserve high praise. The camera work and scene staging is top notch. And the organization required to get the trips planned, the lines scripted & recorded, all the pieces filmed, and to edit it all together so well is insane, especially with a small crew.

I, as a man, think about the Roman Empire daily.

I’ve been in Rome for 2 days and it’s just completely unbelievable and surreal what went on here and the history of it all .

I love this twofold: 1) It’s surprisingly hard to find a comprehensive timeline of old societies. Please, please do more! 2) Ms. Mary is an absolute QUEEN.

Mary is amazing. Mary made an impression on my wife and sparked her curiosity of History. It's made our marriage stronger. We sit and enjoy documentaries together and talk about history all the time. Thanks for igniting that spark Mary. I'm forever grateful 🙏

My wife is Italian. For our honeymoon we went to Italy, right around the time that the "this is my Roman Empire" memes cropped up. At this same time I was reading Mary's "SPQR"....I figured this would be a great way to tie it all off with a bow, and it did not disappoint.....wow.

The David Attenbourough of ancient history. I love you Mary Beard and I wish you a long healthy life. ❤

i dont know what i fell asleep to but this is what i woke up to.
  • I Love the way Mary orders her thoughts and presents very complex history as though it were just a normal conversation. This is a rare talent. It inspires a student to then go learn all the details they can. She has given a framework for further learning. I think she is one of the greatest teachers of her time. She reminds me of the great Physiologists Arthur Guyton (no physician has published more work than him, at one point 70% of all Chairmen of USA Physiology departments trained under him). He was a kindly, sensitive old genius. that quietly inspired you to go devour as much knowledge as you could. Mary seems to have all those delightful gifts, so humble, so magnificent, she is.

As an American obsessed with world history of all ages, you Brits sure do have some OUTSTANDING crews of archeologists, historians, narrators, and presenters. Add Ms. Beard to that list, you can feel her passion as she speaks, and her understanding of Latin is top.

My new modern-day heroine is Mary Beard. Mary and the unseen team have done an astounding job on this series. I'm about to be a total history addict once more after a long hiatus.

I was completely captivated by this documentary. Mary's presentation was flawless and her understanding of the subject, superb. As a teacher, I could see how much she loved her subject, especially when she stretched out on the ground at the foot of a statute for a better perspective. Mary's comprehensive presentation has opened my eyes to history that I thought I hated! I just toured Rome and 6 countries in August and I WANT MORE! I sincerely thank you for this documentary!
  • @DrGarri
Mary, through the years you have gotten a niche in my life and heart I must say. I absolutely adore your presentations, your acute mind, your wonderful wit, your crass language that sometimes seems to be the closest description of what you are talking about, your incredible knowledge, your humbleness, what a joy you are! Thank you for all your efforts and research, you, and Sir David Attenborough are the real Jewels of the British crown! From a faithful admirer in Germany.

This documentary series on the complete history of the Roman Empire is truly remarkable. The depth and breadth of information covered is impressive, providing a comprehensive understanding of the empire's rise, achievements, and eventual decline. The production quality is top-notch, and the narration is engaging, making it a captivating viewing experience. Kudos to the creators for delivering such an informative and visually stunning series.
  • I love how they use no special effects and movies to "show" us what was happening. They just show everything as it is today. The sceneries, artifacts, etc. It's like they want us to imagine and reconstruct the empire in our own head and imaginations!
