My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.

Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.

What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS

You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here:    • Draw My Life

Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).

What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList

What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.

Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.

Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here:    • Why I Want to Live in France

Do you speak French? Oui.    • Un Jour en Francais (English Subtitles)

You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here:    • The Pitch (Sorta) - Agnar's Box and C...

Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.

I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: patreon.com/jayswanson

I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson

But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

And here's the French wishlist: bit.ly/JaysFrenchWishList

Thanks for watching!

I think in watching your vlogs going back to 2016, the curiosity about your life stems from probably watching the arc of what Joseph Campbell called “the hero’s journey”. You started in a low place and gradually rose up out of the ashes (so to speak). It doesn’t mean everything perfect, you still have everyday life problems. So many of us love the face to face reflection vlogs because mirrors our human experience. 👾☺️

💕 love your positive attitude today Jay; had a pretty difficult day in hospital 🏥 & found out a friend passed away this afternoon. You are always an inspiration to watch regardless of his bad of day one has.

It's 5am in Montana and I'm watching you. Your comments on corner cafés is spot on. Perfect company plus mediocre drinks equals timeless moments.

Going for those perfect shots while leaving your friends is something I can relate. When I’m on vacation, I get up super early just so I can go off and capture those Instagram shots without all the crowds.

You are a writer! Right!! There are a lot of books about life in Paris but how many can be supplemented with a lot of videos. You must have a lot of experiences that will and can fill a number of books. If you feel like I think your feel in this video, you can slow down, "smell the roses" and maybe find a nice lady to share your life with ~ in Paris!
  • @dixierosestudios
I would be interested in reading a more in depth story of what led you to France first and foremost and then your quest to get there. I love hearing your childhood stories. Just those quirky little things that make you, YOU.
  • I love how you share your life. You are an inspiration for anyone that wants to follow their dreams!! You show it’s possible if you keep working on it. You might stumble and fall, but you get back up and keep going!! You need more of the “in the moment “ in your life to stay sane. Have a Wonderful Day!!😁

Ideas for the book - who, apart from family, inspired you in the different stages of your life? How did you find the inner strength to carry on in difficult times? Top 5 life lessons you've learned so far.

I agree with all the suggestions below but I'd also be interested in a section on the years between Mercy Ships and coming to Paris in 2017. You touched on it in your bankruptcy vlog but I feel there was a lot left unsaid there. I hope you get back into writing regularly. You are an inspiration.
  • @TheLynata
I think with the style of writing you have, it will be so impressive (the things that happened to you through these 2 years) to see them in a book. Also what life in Paris is without making a comic (talking for really good writers like you)-but this you could leave for the future.
  • How weird this would come up today!!! I am filing for bankruptcy tomorrow and I remember when you touched on your experience with it...you obviously were younger than I am in this process but I would really be interested in reading a book about your life from arrival in Paris the million jobs you did to stay and where you see yourself going....it’s great to listen to you every day and I will miss that but if it means a book comes out the other end then great!!..how is the office coming along ??? See you tomorrow xx Kerrin and Leia xx

As far as books go, you know which ones I'm waiting for. I think that your videos speak about your life and your progress over the past years so to write about it would detract from your other writing projects that are long overdue :)
  • @judyt.5702
Thanks so much. I can now experience Paris through your blogs. I will never be able to afford a trip there. But this is so much fun. Thank you so much. You make the day brighter.

Running in the heat?! You’re a better person than I. I struggled to get in 30 minutes today on the dreadmill at the gym (AC). I’d love to know more about what inspired your Paris move, the struggles, successes, etc...all of it.
  • @thedavidguy01
I’m interested in hearing more about your writing and I’m hoping you will have time to do more of it. I still want to see content about France and Paris, but it doesn’t have to be the majority of your vlog.
  • @KarinLynnBates
Only forward! Things always have to change. It’s a part of the personal evolution of life. It’s interesting to watch you go through the transition process of evolution. A book on your Paris life is a great idea. I know from my five or so friends that have done it that it’ll be hugely popular— anything Paris-based always is! 👍🏼✌🏼
  • @tadbeth
I'm finally back on my gym mornings and watching your vlog while biking routine, it's the thing I can look forward to after slogging through all the other weights nonsense 😂 I appreciate the slices of life that you share with us, you taking time to to just talk to the camera and your worldview in general. We (your viewers) will enjoy any amount of vlogs that you feel comfortable with sharing and I look forward to the changes ahead. Have a fantastic day!
  • @peggyrambo10
Good morning! Can’t believe I’m the first one. Yay! Though why am I up this early. Really bring back old memories of the cd Walkman. Great job like always!
