It's a common misconception that Abby did NOT have a key piece of information BEFORE a crucial scene.

I never caught that. I don't think that particularly matters much since (like you alluded to) it doesn't mean it was THAT Tommy. Food for thought though.
  • I knew that Tommy's name was mentioned but I didn't really look into the 'pushing Joel away' part I guess. I thought it was about that just being who Abby is at this point, for the few times that I've experienced it I guess. Then again, Abby did let Joel pull her up before though.
  • TLOU2 is a groundbreaking masterpiece on all fronts. It’s mind boggling when people say the game or story is “bad” just because of a creative decision that divided fans. I never wanted Joel to go, but I don’t see how there could’ve been a more interesting plot. Thank you for the detailed video!

I remember spotting this on my second playthrough. It’s important to remember that at this point, it’s Tommy she’s looking for. When she and Owen are talking about if ‘he’s’ there, they’re not talking about Joel. So even if Tommy never mentioned Joel’s name, Tommy is in danger because that’s who she’s looking for
  • Your video is great, because it highlights a prevailing misinterpretation of many people. Druckmann's writing is full of hidden details that have not been detected, let alone appreciated. Apparently, there are many people who have not understood that Druckmann never wants to spoon-feed his audience, but, instead, he always chooses to subtly hints at what he wants to convey in a scene or in a line of dialogue. Although his storylines may seem simplistic at first, in reality they contain many latent aspects and layers regarding the inner world of the characters. To give another example of misinterpretation due to "shallow" approach, I was looking recently at a voting poll, which was about choosing which one is the most reckless person: Joel or Tommy? I was surprised to see that people have voted Joel by 80% (!) as the most reckless between the two, which is hilarious and it goes to show how much gamers have misunderstood Druckmann's suggestiveness. The main argument of the vast vajority of people who judged Joel as the most reckless was that the latter one massacred a hospital in order to protect his surrogate daughter. They could not be more far from the truth. In reality, Joel is pragmatic and realist. He would NEVER seek revenge against anyone, unlike his brother. Additionally, he was always certain and absolutely conscious about his actions. Tommy, on the other hand, is the epitome of recklessness and impulsivity, and this is proven by the fact that he contradicts himself all the time. He committed crimes alongside his brother for which he is deeply remorseful. He joined the fireflies only to abandon them after realising that they are megalomaniac hypocrites who want the same thing as the army: power. Although at the beginning he cared about Ellie's safety, in the end he didn't hesitate to exploit her in order to get his revenge (by manipulating Ellie to hunt Abby for a second time in the epilogue). Tommy is nothing like his brother, and he knows it. No matter what his negative opinion is about Joel's immoral actions, Tommy looks up to his older brother and respects him, by acknowledging the fact that Joel, despite his flaws, was deeply certain and conscious about his choices. Joel wouldn't change a thing from what he has done. Tommy, however, doesn't have anything else except second thoughts, remorse and guilt. Apart from that, Druckmann has mentioned in interviews that Joel didn't ever track down the officer who gave the command to the soldier to shoot Sarah, because Joel doesn't see any meaning in revenge. He acts in cold blood, instead of letting his emotions get the better of him. Also, when Ellie accused Tommy for his procrastination to go after Abby by stating that Joel would have already been in Seattle, Tommy said to her: "No he wouldn't!" He knows his brother better than her. There is a collectable letter in The Last of Us Part I, which can be found inside of an abandoned cafeteria in Pittsburgh. This letter is written by a woman named Eva who says that the military of the quarantine killed her son because he joined the resistance. She concludes the letter by mentioning that, after her son's death, she has no longer will for life and that her last intention is to die by taking with her as many soldiers as she can. After reading the letter, Joel monologues to himself: " With that kind of thinking... no one wins". This is a line which can be easily missed, because it is prerequisite that the player will find the above mentioned collectable. It is a well hidden detail which carries special meaning and significance for Joel's non-impulsive nature. To me, this is GOOD character writing.

If the video had continued for another few seconds, we would have seen the way Abby looked at Joel upon receiving the new information. It actually takes her a few seconds to process that it really is Joel, after all that time, in that situation.
  • @malkuusha
Well yeah, did you forget? It was said in one of the flashbacks that they were looking for Tommy, NOT for Joel. Well, they were looking for Joel in general, but they came to Jackson not knowing Joel will be there. They heard from some old firefly how Tommy lives in a small city in Wyoming and decided to find him and interrogate him on Joel’s location
  • I always thought that, when Tommy says Joel’s name, Abby is too pumped up with adrenaline that she just doesn’t even realize what that means.
  • I'm not sure how knowing the information earlier makes Abby more understandable. The bigger issue is that Joel and Tommy save her life and she doesn't want to know their side of the story once she learns their names. If she begins to suspect who they are earlier, it makes her decisions later less impulsive. For later portions of the story to work, the audience will need to relate to her.
  • @Serpentar9000
If only they had "never use real names if you meet strangers" rule Tommy : "Hey, I'm Bob, and this is Jack" Abby : " Thanks for the help, but our group gotta leave" Tommy : "Understandable, have a great day" Whoosh, rooooll credits!
  • @takewhataway
I remember clearly when Tommy said "joel" and Abby's face changed. That's the point where I said "ohshit". Its weird if people forgot that part
  • @Will-ob8xp
This is a brilliant find! I’ve always seen people complain about this part of the game but this has totally nullified their arguments.
  • @Raavenart229
You can even see it in her face when Tommy introduced Joel to her. Her face was like "Holy shit! I found him! Ok focus, don't be suspicious "
  • I thought it was pretty obvious she knows who they are she also knows if she kills joel tommy will kill her if she manages to kill both she dies to the hoard
  • @Roland6733
I pretty much it all Btw i have never played the game, i only watch videos about both games, sadly i probably never get a PS5 to play this 2 masterpiece
  • @Ya-rs9mk
    THAT’s WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING
  • @thatstuff3596
does abby know that joel’s brothers name is tommy? i don’t think we ever see abby say his name, not even in any of the flashbacks.
  • @sdrxke
I don’t think she knew their was a Tommy tbh
  • @Ice_wolf2k
if joel never saved abby joel still be alive by this time and he be able to get away from it without a problem
  • @Tillyard86
Because as we all know, only one person in the world can have a specific first name. 😂
