What a penny floor looks like 6 years later

Published 2018-01-20
Wondering how a penny floor sealed with polyurethane will hold up over time? Here’s a video of the condition of my penny floor that was installed on 2012. It hasn't been resealed so some patina / oxidation has happened but overall it's held up quite well over time.

I'm getting a lot of the same questions in the comments so I'll try to answer the biggest ones here:
1. Yes, the pennies have oxidized a bit since the polyurethane layer has worn off. I like the patina and the oxidation that has happened... although I admit I should clean it up and reseal it soon.
2. YES, the polyurethane can be sanded off and the pennies cleaned using several different methods, then the floor resealed.
3. I did not use EPOXY/RESIN for many reasons.. the biggest being that I don't like the way it looks (shiny layer of glass). And, it's also really temperamental to work with which made it a little too risky for me to try at that time. Lastly, I like that the polyurethane can be sanded off and I can make some changes to the floor. I plan to do this soon.
4. Others have successfully created penny projects using epoxy resin so watch those videos if you are interested in learning about how to do that.
5. Yes there are a few dimes in there (just for fun). All of the pennies are facing the same direction except for ones that have significant years (year my house was built, family/friend's birthdays that contributed to the project, etc). Those pennies are reversed or tails up -- just to add some whimsy & spark conversation.

Thanks for watching!

It bothers me that you can see squares.
  • She says she doesn't have that much attention to detail WHILE SHOWING ALL THE PENNIES TURNED THE SAME WAY
  • I’m a tiler and I did a floor with pennies 5 years ago but I used clear epoxy to seal them starting after laying them they still look pretty good now.

You have no idea how happy it made me to see all the pennies heads up and facing the same way

My local bar has this as flooring. You gotta see the drunks trying to pick up change!!!!
  • No attention to detain? All of those pennies are facing in the same direction Lol. That's some serious patience and skill

The lines aren't bad. They make it look like there is a tile effect which I like. And the Canadian coin wouldn't bother me so bad. But seeing the one silver dime everyday would drive me bonkers. Especially since it's of center. Maybe as a center piece I could but then again probably not. Lol. But that's just me. Everyone is different. The floor is very pretty. I love how some of the pennies have changed color like an aged piece of copper. It's very creative. Which I love that diy creativity aspect. I'm into diy.
  • This has become even better with age! I love your thoughtfulness in having certain coins have special meaning. This is an intersection between art, functionality, and a personal touch that would make me smile every time I entered the home. :)

Its only gone like that because she has no clear screen over the pennys...

Taking a poop, smoking a joint, and watching a YouTube video on a penny floor. This is my life.

2:30 you thought you would fool us with a 'penny floor'? I see that dime. 😂

Looks absolutely great to me, and Lincoln's heads are all relatively aligned. I wanted to do something similar but for a table, and was worried about how it would look like within months, but this looks great after 6 years so now, I have no worries. Thanks for the video!

Love it!! You’re so brave! I would be so afraid To do this!! It looks great, and it absolutely adds tons of character! Thanks for the tips and showing what it looks like after a time!
  • Late to the party here. I personally don’t like it BUT it’s your house, your floor, and I love that you love all of your imperfections. Honestly if I had done it I probably would too. Be proud of your work! Also thank you for showing us what it looks like after some wear and tear. ❤️

At $2.56 per square foot, plus glue cost, this is comparable in cost to a variety of flooring materials, and vastly more durable than most.

Love your floor. It's unique. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Where some see nothing but "flaws", another person (like me) sees a lovely, creative, unique piece of art. Outstanding job!!
