How to Read the Bible - Charles Spurgeon Sermon

Matthew 12:3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the "Prince of Preachers." In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon's which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon's College, which was named after him after his death.

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.

I was saved in my bedroom, reading The Gospel of John. When I got to chapters 18 & 19. I got on my knees next to bed ask God to forgive me, and let Jesus be Lord of my life. I have so much love for Gods’ Word, that He call me to teach His life changing Word through power of The Person of The Holy Spirit. Making Disciples for Gods Kingdom. And I thank God everyday for my saved life. Amen
  • When reading the Bible, ask and pray to the Holy Spirit to open your heart to receive the Word. Ask Him to renew your mind and wash it clean and to help you retain it. Also, read it out loud so you hear yourself. Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word. Also, listen to it while you sleep. Get steeped in the Word. Before you know it, you will learn it.
  • There is a reason, 100 years on, people are still listening to, and hearing, this sermon.

It is Christmas Eve 2021 and I am sitting on my front porch listening to this Pastors sermons over 100 years after he spoke the words. God said "My Word will not return to me void". May our minds and hearts be renewed daily by seeking God and His Words of love to us. God bless!
  • I stand in awe of my King and Savior that He would bless us with Charles Spurgeon!

Thanks to this channel I've heard dozens of Spurgeon's sermons, but this. This is one of his most important sermons. Completely eye opening to the diligent seeker, and for those whom desperately seek our savior.

There is a quality in these sermons that’s very real. Even with the difficulty of admonishment there is a kindness and gentleness in the speaking of these sermons
  • It’s been one week since God opened my eyes and especially my ears to Charles Spurgeon’s Sermons, and I feel like I’ve vaulted forward on my journey down the Narrow Path. I’ve been averaging one sermon per day thus far, and I’ve already received one heck of an education. Even though it’s obviously not the voice of Spurgeon himself, I can feel the fire in just the words themselves. Thank you God!! Again.
  • When we read the Bible we are on holy ground. Wow that's amazing. I never thought of the Bible. I would open it and hoped to hear God. Thank God for this sermon. I have a whole new way of looking at the Bible and I have many in my home. The Bible is priceless.
  • "Knowledge of the scripture may bring pride in you, leading to your destruction". How true! God will grant us inward spirit and truthful worship due to scriptures truths, before truly and selflessly sharing knowledge of scripture to others, rather than to share scripture out of one's own selfish effort and imposition.. How I am guilty of this. May Christ be truly my own rather than claiming to represent him while not being of Him and in His way and truth.
  • There are a few people I am positive are alive and well this minute though their body be dust. Spurgeon is one.

In my steps to come back to the church, I'm finding C.H. Spurgeon and George Müller to be invaluable. I think I'm finally beginning to understand.

This was great...Thoughts I never thought of...A way to see scripture in its true form..Even years ago with less distractions people still had a hard time picking up the bible and studying it...Today its even harder...Today the enemy casts much information to deter those from seeking truth, seeking a relationship with God, seeking from reading His word.   Like Charles says.."When His children go to the word the verses pass under the eye and the sentences glide over the mind, but there is no true reading...The word goes in one ear and out the other..You can read a great amount and the eye glances but the mind never rests...The soul does not light upon the truth and stay there.."

Instructions from Rev. Gifford, John Bunyan's pastor: Pray God that He Himself would convince you of the reality of the truth of His Word and set you down therein by His own Spirit. O friends! cry to God to reveal Jesus Christ unto you; there is none that teacheth like Him. I have these words tucked inside my Bible. They are a great reminder to me of the importance of the daily task before me--reading a message from the living God especially for me.
